Women's NCAA Tourney thoughts.....

Jensen is a great recruiter and overall coach, but at this point in her head coaching career, her in game adjustments and sub patterns are at times subpar. After the 18-3 start, FDU's coach called a TO and changed their defense to quickly double Heiden every time she got a touch. It wasn't hard to see.

A good in-game Iowa coach makes an immediate adjustment, has the Hawks run a 5-out or 4-out offense and let Chit-Chat blow by her defender and either lay it or dish it as FDU defenders collapse. Hell, I'm more of a wrestling guy, but that ain't rocket science. But Jensen didn't, hence 3 consecutive turnovers. Then she inserted Deal into the lineup.

Jensen has been giving Deal plenty of minutes this season, I presumed either because she practices well or Jensen wants to get her ready for next season. But Deal brings nothing to the table at this point and is not ready for the big stage, and she's proven it over and over. Today during one stretch she tossed up 2 airballs, got a shot blocked, and had a TOver. -18 today when she was on the court. More Houston, less Deal would be a better game plan going forward.

I could not believe how bad Addie Deal was shooting the ball today and really for most of the season. I would say was in a terrible slump but she really has only had 3 games all year when she shot the ball well.

When she had her good games 2/3 of them, she showed a deadly three but for some reason
her playing time dropped and she was hesitant to launch threes, wouldn't even consider them

Wonder if that was a coaching decision, she certainly has the ability to be a sharpshooter from
what I saw

In todays game we were certainly lacking threes, we were 1-13

Kylie is usually good for 2 threes a game but was off today and we really miss McCabe who could
be relied for 2/3 threes almost every game

I kept wondering why Jan didn't call a timeout to slow FD down but she waited and waited

They were on a roll and needed to be checked, and the Hawks were having trouble keeping them
in check

However We Won and hopefully have first game jitters our of the way

GO HAWKS, MEN AND WOMEN

Iowa got a #2 seed and will host its first round game in Iowa City against Fairleigh Dickinson on Sat. If Iowa wins that game, they will play either #7 seed Georgia, or the #10 seed from the play-in game. That potential 2nd game will also be in Iowa City on Monday.

I know nothing about FDU other than what the committee seeded them. There seems to be a big gap in the women's game between the mid-majors and P4 programs. So I am going to guess that FDU has almost as much chance to win as Senegal had against Team USA in the FIBA womens world cup.
That didn't age well.

Ava is obviously Iowa's strength but when she's taken away Iowa just forces bad passes inside. The guards are reluctant to shoot.

Yes, its quite the contrast from the start of the year when Jan was playing a deep bench and everybody seemed confident to shoot.

I guess I shouldn't argue with the results though. Since Jan benched Addie for Stremlow and switched priorities to focus on defense first and feeding the post, Iowa only has 1 loss, a bad loss, but only 1 loss. Maybe just write the FDU game off as a day when all 4 guards, and Houston too, all had a bad shooting day and somehow Iowa still won

Our offense last 4 games is 64,59,45 and 58 yesterday. True, we are 3-1 in that stretch, but one has to hope we are going to have a break out offensive game if we are going to advance. We only made one 3 pt shot yesterday.........it was just not a pretty game, and without Ava, it would have been a one and done.

BTW, did anyone else think the rims sounded a little loose yesterday?

We could have played a lot better for sure, but I don't think we are giving FDU enough credit. I was VERY impressed by that team.

I don't know how their coaching staff does it. Every staff preaches hustle, awareness and quick reactions, but getting players to consistently buy-in is the Holy Grail.

The FDU players were extremely disciplined and moved with hustle and purpose. On top of that, every player was in great physical shape. That coach somehow has found the magic touch.

If I were Jan, I'd use tape of that game to show the players the benefits of S&C, snapping your body with any change of direction, playing on your toes, and sprinting rather than loping. There was a stark difference between the two teams yesterday.
