It’s like people can’t admit it’s a terrible product just because it’s females. It has nothing to do with it.

If it was a men’s league playing at the same level no one would watch it first of all, and more importantly there would t be all this white knight defense of it. It’s terrible basketball. The reason people watch is for the soap opera effect and the fact that it’s trendy.

I love watching professional pool. 8 ball, 9 ball, one pocket, snooker, you name it. Watch the hell of it streamed online. You know why I don’t go to my local house and watch league night? Because it’s a bunch of middling players like me and it’s not exciting to watch.

LOL love it. But you're absolutely right. It's definitely not in the best interest of the league when the drama is a bigger draw then the talent.

How do you explain Golden State? They fill a big arena regularly and have a pretty passionate fanbase.

Okay, but your second point makes it sound like good marketing and that it's sustainable. BTW that's an 18,000 seat arena they fill, not a HS gym.

I have no dog in the fight but I find some of these points rather curious. Discounting the data (tv viewers, arena attendance) is an interesting take.

Seems like you attributed (for example) the GSV success in attendance to novelty and Lesbians :). You might want to count the missing very large demographic in all of this, women. Women are driving most of this and it's likely not a flash in the pan. No disrespect, but we're a bunch of old white guys (most of us) who likely don't get it as much as we think we do.

My mom (who passed away a handful of years ago) was very proud of her time playing in the girls' state basketball tournament in Iowa. She would've have loved this. I think there are a lot of women who want to watch women's sports (my wife and daughter are included). Just trying to provide another perspective here.
 
I have read somewhere the fan makeup at WNBA games is something like 57% men and 43% women, which is a good % of women for a sports event.

But I have also read that the big push in the WNBA attendendance increase has come from Gen Z, with both young males and young females attending games.

Nothing wrong with another perspective. That's cool.

Seems like you read "only" into my comments, or some inferred snark that wasn't there.

My suggestion that they're drawing well because they're a new franchise in a sport whose popularity is peaking also in a demograhically-favorable market would seem pretty obvious. Those things are fundamental reasons a new franchise in any business does well. None of them are a negative or pejorative in nature.

Great points. Edit: I didn't infer snark, I just think your assertion was incomplete and limited, and I provided more context. Obviously, women are watching women's sports, and that's all pretty good IMHO.

Also, there are other markets with solid attendance that aren't San Francisco.
