Who's going to Start the conversation....?

Coming in I figured Heck would be the guy and he still may be. But I think Brown looked better today. Playing two QB’s is always an issue with consistency overall and with timing with the receivers and with different cadences with the O-line. Generally a mess in general. I think the coaches managed it as well as they could today. The running game made it easy.

We have two more game-data points and several practice data-points remaining.

If KF/TL we trust!

Obviously, they have to eventually name a starter which they will. They are indeed so close but Hank looked good today with good command of the offense. The luxury Iowa has is that if one is off, they can have another option to go with the other and go with who is hotter. That's how close they are. Not so much going with two every game and splitting series but the option of going with the other if one is off a certain game. That's my glass half full!

I thought they both looked good handing it off to Moulton.

Although early it seemed almost like it was scripted that Moulton would play RB more in the offensive drives where Hank was the QB, and Xavier Williams and McNeil would play RB in the drives that Heck was the QB.

I don't know how much of that was by design. Iknow the new RB Phillips got hurt early, which may have thrown off the RB rotation.

Moulton made the most of his touches. He seemed to be a more determined runner than I remembered, not going down on shoestring tackles like he did more than a few times last year.

I was disappointed to see Phillips get hurt. I was looking forward to seeing him run more. I hope he heals up fast.

Neither QB looked particularly sharp or accurate, which was disappointing. Brown's passes tended to sail, and Heck's too often were behind. Sailing passes points to fundamental footwork and release issues, whereas throwing behind is more of a timing issue. Hopefully, the coaches can work out those kinks.

Informally, I counted 3 Heck passes that should have been caught, and 2 for Brown. Factoring those in, the stats would have been almost identical.

Heck's INT is going to hurt him in Kirk's eyes, but, IMO, I like to see QBs take that chance on 4th and goal. The risk/reward is worth it. Let the QB try to squeeze one in there.

I was surprised that Phillips didn't look better before he got hurt...I think he tallied 5 yds total on 4 carries. I expected him to roll and rumble. He seems like the sort of RB that can be trouble if he gets past the LOS, but he's controllable if you get him at the LOS before he gets a chance to get rolling.

I expect Brown to start again vs ISU, with Heck's role more limited -- perhaps even have some specific plays drawn up for Heck specifically, which would make sense.

I think Heck's upside is much higher, but he's the kind of QB that's not going to feel comfortable, and will play too tight, if he senses that the coaches have him on a tight leash.

It's not necessarily a negative, but Brown is Nate Stanley with a little more foot speed. He's a system QB. The question is whether or not he has the moxie to motivate and put the team on his back when necessary. He hasn't displayed those intangibles yet.

I give Brown a slight edge in overall play. But I have to wonder how it would have looked if their roles were reversed? Would Heck have lead us to three TD drives on the first three possessions? Quite possibly. It was not an apples to apples comparison with regards to who was playing around them. And as someone else mentioned, drops were an issue for both. But you also had missed receivers by both QBs.

I think they both get opportunities next week against ISU. How they rotate them will be interesting to see.

Brown missed two TD passes with questionable throws. Both were wheel routes with the receivers open, looking inward over their left shoulder & Brown throwing it to their outside shoulder making it a very difficult catch. Don’t know if they were just bad throws or overly cautious throws to avoid an interception.
Neither of these is good, but one can be remedied more than the other.

Both of those throws should have been caught. I know most of you are sold on Hecklinski, but Brown looks to me to be the one to go with.

Yup.

I was wrong. The first missed TD was thrown by Hecklinski (not Brown) to Diaz on a wheel route.
Brown missed on a similar throw to Vonhamme at the end of the 1st Half

Jack Smith who gave the Hawkeyes a shout out at a Senate hearing

Explaining that he wasn't at an Atlanta Hawks game

He was actually at a Maryland game to watch Caitlin Clark and the Iowa Hawkeyes

There was a photo of him at the game in Maryland cheering for the Hawkeye Women
