What ever happened to...

... I can still like and respect someone even if I disagree with them. More people should try it.

1000%

Truer words were never spoken.

I try not to dwell on it, but I must admit, at times the current state of society, where respectful debate and civil discourse have been displaced by "feelings over fact," and "perception over reality" depresses me.

Polls have shown that a good portion of the population feels that murder and assasination are reasonable courses of action when disagreeing with someone. That is one of the most sobering things I've seen, ever.

His beef was mainly with Jon.

He was gone for several years, came back and posted regularly for a few years, then stopped.
I'm not sure of the thread, but I recall him and Rob really going at it over the course of a few days, then, he was gone. IIRC, Rob stated that he did not ban him.

Love him or hate him, his posts were always lively and entertaining.

Never head butted with him whatsoever.

He head butted with Rob Howe.

Rob banned him.
Perhaps I'm thinking of someone else. Who was the SJW poster that always seemed to morph into a sociologist, attorney, judge, psychogist, etc., that you routinely called out?

I vaguely recall him labeling the I.C. police racists when they questioned one the larger Iowa d-linemen somewhere in the city after a BOLO was sent out for "a large African-American young male" in the area.

I remember thinking, "What in the hell do you expect the cops to do in that situation, interview elderly caucasion women?"

On a side note, Fry.

The "Open Discussion" forum was supposed to be anything goes except for abuse, etc., so what exactly prompted the deletion of the politics thread? I hadn't looked at it in weeks, then decided to take a look out of curiosity, and it had disappeared.

Must have been something pretty egregious....

Don’t know the demographics, but I am guessing the frequent posters at this point are 50+ years old or much older. Fry is an old soul, but my man is the youngest dude here now. That doesn’t mean anything one way or another. I look at the @#1DieHardHawk list of names, and I wonder who checked out, and who passed away.

Most of those people you listed just stopped coming to the site. There were TONS of folks who left in 2020 during and after covid because they felt Rob was too far left leaning. That's one of the reasons Rob was let go and when he left, that's when I got asked to moderate. I for one like Rob (never met him in real life). Someone who'll take serious career/income hits to stand up for what they believe in is a better moral person than I am. It wasn't just here at HN that Rob lost out...you've probably noticed he's not a Hawk reporter anywhere nowadays. I don't agree with all of his viewpoints but that's the beaty of life. I can still like and respect someone even if I disagree with them. More people should try it.

Rob was paid but I have never received a dime which is the way I want it. I was asked at first what I thought would be reasonable for some sort of compensation, but I said I didn't want to get paid and it never went past that. If I get paid then it changes the dynamic and that's not what I'm after.
Loved TK. One time the Hawk women scrimmaged and he asked if they ran shirts vs skins.

Had many lively exchanges with Gold. Of course he could go overboard with his Walter Mitty/Commander McBragg shtick. And he had to turn even the most mundane conversations into high brow, sanctimonious morality lectures. And he would have despised Caitlin Clark and everything about her game (which was a direct offense to his basketball sensibilities).

I agree that many of them bowed out during or shortly after Covid. It changed the world like nothing since 9/11/2001

That was HawkGold

I had my moment where I thought about leaving as I am much more progressive than this board but decided to avoid the politics and off topic board and talk sports.

I think that may have been HawkGold. It seems he claimed to be of many things. Lol me I remember that.

One other huge divide was the racial case by Daniel's, Wadley, etc. against Doyle, BF, KF, etc. That brought the divisive politics straight into our Hawkeye living rooms. Rob was very opinionated and took on anyone that had a differing opinion. So a lot of people like me left because we just wanted to talk about the Hawks.

This is kind of dark, but I sometimes wonder which posters have unfortunately passed away. Kind of sad to think about.

I can comment on a couple.

HawkGold - He just flat out cold-turkey quit. After the Ukranian War started he had many posts in the off-moderated thread about it as he had been there and had friends still living there so was quite worried about them. I remember going back and forth with him about that and political stuff but I feel at the end it was felt to be respected between us. I just recall one quick last post I think stating he was done which came to fruition.

I remember TkSirius also going back and forth with the admin - Wonder if some of these people just find another site to lurk and post on. Dunno.

Okeef was another that pretty much said he was done and quit cold-turkey and never posted again. Complete stonewall. I wonder if he found another site so just said F it, I'm done here. He had threatened in the past a couple times but at some point the last was his last. I'm not sure what eventually was the last straw with him as he spent a ton of time baiting and trolling people on here. Once you understood him and his trolling/fishing for responses he was tolerable and I felt funny. He clashed with the admins but was man enough to stick to his guns and continue with the challenge. He freaking loved to troll for responses.
Or in jail and can't post!

That's the key most messageboards don't understand. ALLOW it all. Just not on the main board.
The market takes care of the rest. People who want to act like monkeys at the zoo throwing digital poo at each other can go do that. People who don't stick in the main board. Most people don't want that nonsense.
That's where I think HN had it wrong from the start. It was outlawed so people started trying to sneak it in like people do. Then it causes problems.

It's like like Dan Patrick used to say on SportsCenter..."You can't stop [it], you can only hope to contain [it].

If you have a dedicated board where the political dorks can argue amongst themselves and not bother anyone else, it acts like a pressure release valve.

I miss Jon as those were fun days. He would do those little skits wearing glasses talking in a voice like the chipmunks. Was the character Squids or something like that? Funny as could be. Hope Jon is doing well. He could always make me see a side of things regarding the Hawks I wasn't smart enough to see on my own.

I miss TK too. A lot of good posters were chased off. I almost left, but enjoy talking to you suckers too much!
