West Virginia to SEC?

According to one of the most informed guys around, WVU is on the SEC's radar.

Hearing the SEC vote to admit Texas A&M was 10-2 and that West Virginia is squarely on the SEC radar as a potential 14th member.

I've read the same thing from a couple different sources. Also heard that Slive was given permission to negotiate with both WVU and Missouri. If the Big 10 wants Missouri, they may have to act soon. However, it sounds like they won't do any expanding until 2016

Texas would never join the Big Ten.

I would never say never, but yes the chances are slim and none. I was surprised to read speculation about Texas going to the ACC. I wouldn't think they would go there either. The next few weeks could be interesting. I have no idea what will happen other than A&M to the SEC.

I just don't understand West Virginia. Its population is only about 1.85 million people or less than two-thirds the population of Iowa. The Charleston-Huntington market is the 64th largest TV market in the country. Plus, Charleston & Huntington are the two largest cities in the state. I just don't get it.

I'm so sick and tired of hearing all this conference expansion crap. Unless it has to do with ISU going to the MAC. :)

The Big Ten does not want Missouri.

You do not want Missouri in the Big Ten. You post against expansion in every thread. You do not want to see the Big Ten expand, we get it. I do not really want to see the Big Ten expand either but if the B12 dissolves then it would be fun to play Missouri every year.

Interesting...The Big East loses W. Virginia, a perennial bowl team and the SEC takes Missouri. The Big East would get a fairly good television network if they invited Missouri. West Virginia does not have much of a population base.

So, why would the Big East invite Iowa State to replace either of these teams? Iowa State has few fans around the country except in a handful of areas in central Iowa. Iowa State has NO television market whatsoever. Iowa State is the perennial bottom feeder of the Big 12. KSU shared the basement with ISU until KSU developed a decent football program. ISU simply took KSU's place.

So the Big East would take Kansas, KSU, and Iowa State. What in heaven's name would any of those teams offer a conference on the east coast? Kansas/KSU maybe for bb and ISU doesn't even fit there.

The SEC is moving to different parts of the country for new markets, which is what all the conferences want. What is hell would they want with the three leftovers from the Pac 12? If nothing else, travel costs would skyrocket. The leftovers offer NOTHING in the way of football excitement.

Hell, most people along the east coast don't even know anything exists west of the Mississippi River. Can you imagine the excitement along the east coast if football fans know that Iowa State, Kansas, and KSU are new members of the Big East. Fans would be giddy with excitement waiting for the Rutgers/ISU, UConn/ISU, Syracuse/ISU games.

I am a little lost as to what SEC sees in West Virginia also. While they have a decent football team there is not much of a TV market nor are they very well known nationally.

My father in law is a paid member of an sec board and he's been talking WV for quite a while.

Numbers for survival. I think they may extend invites to certain teams, just to keep their numbers up to ensure survival once the ACC or SEC tries to raid the current Big East

There are almost twice as many people in Iowa as there is in West Virginia.

The Big East doesn't need markets. They have tons of huge markets. What they need is fanbases. You guys love mocking ISU, but in reality ISU had a down year for attendance last year and would have finished right in the middle of the Big East for attendance. Assuming ISU, KU, and KSU end up in the Big East (big if) only WV, Rutgers, Louisville, KSU and Pitt would have a higher attendance average than ISU last year. That includes UConn (the champion who ISU had 7k more average attendance than) and TCU.

I read a Big East thread on a Big East board and most fans were fine with adding ISU. Of course they would prefer Mizzou, but they were willing to take what they could get.

Explain why the Big East needs fanbases over TV markets.

IMO the Big East does not need fanbases they need strong football programs to bring some respectability to its football conference. Right now they have the best basketball conference in the country but the money is in football.

But if either West Virginia or Missouri go to the SEC then I think ISU has a shot at getting into the Big East. Otherwise ISU will be looking at the Mtn West or Conference USA.
