My tremendous 12 hot topics for the upcoming season:

1. How well will the Offensive Line play?
2. Will Stanzi cut down on his turnovers?
3. Will Tarpinian, Nielsen, Johnson and Bruce Davis capably fill the holes left by Angerer and Edds?
4. Will Micah Hyde or Jordan Bernstine take over the starting corner spot?
5. Who will be the primary running back? Will all 3 guys (Hampton, Robinson & Wegher) get enough touches to keep everyone happy?
6. Will DJK and McNutt become the best same year WR tandem in Hawk history?
7. Will Keenan Davis, Sandeman or Chaney take over the 3rd WR spot?
8. Will O’Keefe open up the playbook to better utilize all the talent he has at the skill positions?
9. Will Clayborn be as dominant as we all hope he will be – does he have a shot at 1st Team All American?
10. Will any true freshman (CJ Fed, Derby or Morris) see the field this Fall?
11. Has there ever been a better home schedule for the fans than this upcoming year?
12. Does Iowa have a legit shot to contend for a National Title this year?

I suddenly have an urge for Perkins. 3 pancakes, 2 eggs, 2 pieces of toast, 3 pieces of bacon and 2 sausage patties. Now THAT is a tremendous 12

You must have just got done reading all the pre-season mags. I could swear all of these points were in those rags.

1. Top 3 in the B10
2. Probably. It'd be hard to have more.
3. As long as the D-line stays injury free
4. Hyde
5. All three will split. Hampton will get the most carries. BW will see some time at Slot.
6. It won't appear that way. Too many good WRs behind them.
7. Davis
8. No, and I (future) quote, "Our goal is to be balanced. 50/50 run/pass."
9. Yes.
10. Yes. CJ and Morris. Maybe Carl Davis, Coker or Donnal.
11. Debatable, but it's pretty good.
12. Yes, but we won't get there. I'm betting on Pasadena.

1.How well will the Offensive Line play? Better than last year, which should provide bigger holes for the Cerberus and more time for Stanzi. I predict Reiff as a first-team All-Big Ten and Donnal as a Frosh All-American.
2.Will Stanzi cut down on his turnovers? Yes. With more time and a more dominant running game, Stanzi should make fewer mistakes.
3.Will Tarpinian, Nielsen, Johnson and Bruce Davis capably fill the holes left by Angerer and Edds?
I doubt they perform as well as Angerer and Edds, but they are talented enough to be a top-5 LB core in the conference.
4.Will Micah Hyde or Jordan Bernstine take over the starting corner spot?
I would give the edge to Hyde because he was healthy last year, but if Bernstine ever lives up to his potential, he could be an All-Big Ten performer.
5.Who will be the primary running back? Will all 3 guys (Hampton, Robinson & Wegher) get enough touches to keep everyone happy?
I think they will all get about 8-11 carries per game, but Wegher may be used more in other facets of the game, so I expect his numbers will be lower as than the other two.
6.Will DJK and McNutt become the best same year WR tandem in Hawk history? They very well could be. I could see them both going for 60 catches, 900 yards, and 10 TDs. They probably won't, but they could.
7.Will Keenan Davis, Sandeman or Chaney take over the 3rd WR spot? Keenan Davis is likely the number three. I fully expect him to make the big jump from his Fr. to So. year. Imagine the jump Chad Greenway made, but on offense. This development could preclude DJK and McNutt from putting up the numbers they could.
8.Will O’Keefe open up the playbook to better utilize all the talent he has at the skill positions? Yes and No. He will always use the same offense, but I think he knows he has the talent to take more risks, especially if Stanzi can keep the ball with the Hawkeyes.
9.Will Clayborn be as dominant as we all hope he will be – does he have a shot at 1st Team All American? Absolutely. I think he could have the best year by a DE in Iowa history.
10.Will any true freshman (CJ Fed, Derby or Morris) see the field this Fall? CJF and Morris are likely to see the field, but if Derby is really going to be a QB, he should redshirt. I also expect to see the kicker Mullings see the field. There is no reason that Coach Ferentz would give him a scholarship if he wasn't going to compete for PT right now. I think Andrew Donnal will start and be a monster. Brandon Scherff could see playing time if the OL struggles AND he is in game shape.
11.Has there ever been a better home schedule for the fans than this upcoming year? In 1998, Iowa hosted defending national champion Michigan, preseason #1 Ohio State, Rose Bowl champion Wisconsin, Iowa State (the year the Streak ended), Northwestern (the weak link at 3-9 that year), and Central Michigan. If Iowa had been as good as they are this year, that season would have been great to have season tickets to (Michigan, Ohio State, and Wisconsin went a combined 32-5, with the latter pair winning BCS bowls).
12.Does Iowa have a legit shot to contend for a National Title this year? Any team ranked in the preseason top-10 with the toughest opponents at home in the SEC, Big 10, or Big 12 has a legitimate shot at a National Title. If everything falls perfect they could. Here is what I think would need to happen: an undefeated Iowa beats an undefeated Ohio State team in late November (that would be HUGE in voters eyes); the SEC champ OR Big 12 champ lose at least once; and USC lose at least once. If Iowa is undefeated, the only teams that would be ranked ahead of Iowa (if they beat an undefeated or even 1-loss Ohio State) would be an undefeated team from the SEC, USC, and maybe an undefeated team from the Big 12.

I don't think that that '98 schedule holds a candle to this year's. Not because it wasn't tough, but because this time around we aren't going to be at the games just to watch the other team. The schedule gets way more buzz when you are just as good as the OSU's and Wisconsin's of the world.

And for #12, don't discount Boise State. They are likely to start ahead of Iowa, and if they are undefeated then they will own wins over Viginia Tech and Oregon State, to very good opponents. And if they go undefeated I don't see them getting shut out of the title game again.

You must have just got done reading all the pre-season mags. I could swear all of these points were in those rags.

Considering all the preseason mags don't come out for another month I doubt he read them in there and I doubt you saw them in there.

I agree with the Boise comment. They are likely to be in the NC game. They're good, they don't need to be great every week, and they'll have like a career achievement type angle to them for the voters.

Those Boise thoughts are interesting, could very well happen that way.

A couple of things could possibly go Iowa's way if it came down to us vs them.

1) 100+ yrs of history on our side ( although this may come back to hurt Iowa too, as there are certainly voters out there who are trying to make a point and what better way to stick a fork in the B10's eye than to keep it's undefeated champ out of the title game)
2) strength of schedule should be solidly on our side, which could really help with the portion of the BCS formula the computers factor in-- if ISU and Arizona had decent seasons it wouldn't hurt either
3) late season visibility, BSU's big games are the early season OOC games against VaTech and t(other)OSU. Iowa benefits from a November game against tOSU, that can help make up ground int he polls in a hurry

all in all, being stiffed from a shot in the BCS title game would hurt, but it would still be a nice position to be in
