I just can't take part in a sampling like this...I can look at things from the 1950's to the present...but teams before then, certainly before 1939, I can't do it.

I am sure those Howard Jones Iowa teams of the 1920's were really good to go unbeaten in back to back years...but we are talking about a different game.

I tend to just look at this stuff not in all time perspectives, but my time perspectives, and use the eye test.

And IMO, the 2002 Iowa team is the best of my lifetime, with 1985 #2

With so many of Iowa's great teams being pre 1930 and post 1980 made this a challenge. The big 10 (or Western Conference as it was known then) was a very powerful conference in the early days those so those teams deserve respect.

Iowa also had 2 conference championship in the Western Interstate University Football Association prior to joining the Big 10. Both of those teams made the list including one of my personal favorites of all time the undefeated 1899 team.

Jon, the 2002 team was quite good but the 1985 team wouldn't have lost to that Iowa St. team in Kinnick so I'd give the 1985 team the edge - JMHO

True this is why I put 1985 2 spots ahead of 2002. This and the 1985 team beat the number 2 team in the country.

Just basing this on what I saw. The 2002 defense was perhaps the most intimidating Iowa defense since 1981, and one of the best against the run in school history. Long would have had fun against Antwan Allen and DJ Johnson, but Pagel and Sanders were pretty salty over the middle.

The 2002 Iowa offense was the most prolific scoring offense in school history, with 1985 #2. Both offenses were balanced, but the 2002 offense was a stronger running offense with the best offensive line in school history. Clark was better than Flagg, Mo Brown and CJ Jones were better than Helverson and Happel. Harmon was better than Russell.

Both Kaeding and Houghtlin were clutch kickers, but Kaeding was better. Special teams better in 2002

It would be a great game :)

Iowa was up 24-7 at the half in the 2002 contest vs ISU...Fred Russell had like 130 first half yards..got nicked and didn't play in the second half, Banks had a thumb issue hitting a helmet on follow through and fumbled a couple times...and Senneca Wallace had the game of his life. Playground innovation that was incredible. That was one of the better ISU teams of the last quarter century (even though they finished poorly).

Both teams would have a hard time moving the ball on the ground against each other. Chuck Long would have a big day passing the ball. I am not sure if Brad Banks and the speed of the 2002 receivers might have a big day too though. However I think Chuck Long's passing would pull it out final score about 35-31.

Which year does the modern era of college football begin?

1912 or 1946?

1912 many of the modern rules of the game were set in this year.

1946 many believe this to be the beginning of the modern era as it marked the first year after WWII.

Then just make your list(s) accordingly.

Of course you still run into the problem of how the game in 1958 is pretty much entirely different from 2008, but it's still fun to debate.
