This run should get us our Bennett Stritz replacement

What do you think?? We haven't had to rely solely on Bennett during this run which bodes vey nicely for us !! ( not saying even his presence helps) If these guys come back as a group with this solid big ten season under thier belt, stronger and knowing how the league plays and we get a scorer even close to Bennett we will be tough again !!

Ben has a great track record of success finding and developing point guards. I think the most interesting aspect of this run from a roster standpoint is what philosophy he takes with a budget he has never dreamt of. Very Kirkesque in that he will prioritize good guys who work harder than anyone else over a big recruit who needs to be wined and dined. Anyhow, I imagine he can find hard working kids who are also highly rated, but will be interesting to watch.

Would love to see a pickup like Gavin Doty from Siena, although it could turn into a bidding war. It will be interesting to see the names Iowa is able to attract.

Something to also consider is that we were "likely" underpaying for Stirtz services. Coach probably got a bargain deal. His replacement won't be as affordable, regardless of experience and talent. The market will likely drive up the value. UNLESS, you get a kid that understands the value of being coached by McCollum vs. the money.

Vaaks from Providence would be a nice land as a Stirtz replacement. Even looks a bit like him...

Bennett wasn't known at all in high school

Believe he only had Ben seriously recruiting him and one other program

Ben has the ability to recognize talent

Most of the players who transferred with him to Iowa are Solid players and were not 4 star recruits

Getting Tate Sage was an excellent move

And I do like The Matador's plan and potential, most of the time

It's All Good

Yea, days of playing well with the lights on leading to outside interest are mostly gone. Respect for the game, the 4-year experience, the coaching, let alone, player integrity, are directly correlated to the size of the $ bag.

I mean if you want a literal direct replacement this is the guy lol. If Banks comes back then things fit very similar and you still add the point guard and a center and forward with some good size. Merits to running it back very close to the same starting point that you are so familiar with then adding what you thought you needed.

7'9" Olivier Rioux entered the portal, given he is from Fla, maybe he would be interested in the team that beat his #1 seeded gators.

OK, he may be a bit of a project, but FFS, he is 7'9" tall!
7' 9" and 305 lbs.

And thin as a rail.

BMC/staff would develop him nicely.

Seems almost identical to Bennett

He certainly doesn't hesitate to launch the bombs

He's already used his redshirt and Florida only used him in the final 1-2 minutes of a blowout. Granted his height is appealing, you can't teach 7'9 but he might better off heading to a mid major. Even a blue chip program like Florida will find a way to play someone 7'9 if you've got game.

Depending on how the roster shakes out…I’m okay with Combs being the starter and finding a good backup that can give you 10+ minutes a game.

I realize I am in the minority in that thought process, tho.
I don't think that's a bad approach. And it would be better if a transfer was a younger (sophomore?) guy that could learn the system and take over after Combs is gone.

There could be worse places for him to go than Iowa City.
Iowa doesn't press, doesn't force a fast pace, and with shooters Koch, Sage & Thompson teams have to guard the 3-pt line.
Problem is, BTen Centers would probably physically push him past the 3 pt line!
