Today’s news is something I prayed for. I’m hungry & ready to get to work in my final year. Much love to Iowa, a year I won’t forget! Im excited to find the best BASKETBALL fit for my final year!!

Tavion must have gotten that extra year and is going to look around as to his next stop. Doesn't say Iowa is out of the picture, but I could see him moving on, find a place where he could really showcase his game. With the plethora of young wings we've got he might struggle for minutes.

I do wonder what BM and staff would say about his return?

It's not happening. We have other guys that play that same position. May or may not be as good as him, but he's going to be very expensive. Fulguieras got 3.5 million from Louisville. Banks was a better player and will get more than we can, or would like to pay him.

Having said that, I'm super happy for him. From JUCO to Drake to Iowa to $$$. Well deserved.

Also, we're in good position on 2 5* and a high 4*. We'll need $$$ to have a chance.

I am thinking that if we are going to struggle to keep Banks on board how are we going to have the money to land any five star......... unless that is part of the equation. Cut expenses else where to fill the money bucket so that it can be handed to some five star.

Ben coached this kid up to what he has become along with Bank's own drive, skills and natural abilities. Obviously certain things have to be going on behind the scenes. Bank's is doing what coaches and players do to try to get the most money available. Let's threaten to move on and see if they come back with a better offer.

This kid at this point in my opinion is not NBA bound. An impact college level player......... yes. NBA level player............. no. Would he be valuable to us his senior year........ absolutely.

Yeah I was wrong when I posted earlier. Sometimes ya gotta think about price tag, budget and roster needs. You’d love him back and I’m sure Ben probably gave him a path but on IA’s terms and he can and should go do better on the open market. Different game now lol

The best on-the-ball defender on the team last year. I’m guessing some sorta Thompson/Howard/Sage combo will have to do the dirty work that TB did. I wish the decision would have been made a lot sooner that way BM could have held a spot for him…totally understand why he didn’t tho.

Really doesn’t change my mind. IMO, they are going to be really good this season.

The roster is already in good shape and bringing back a guy this late might upset team chemistry. I would wish him well, and move forward with the young, talented squad of 4s Ben has in the stable.

I hope that if Banks wanted to come back at an affordable price he would be welcomed. However, if he could make more money elsewhere I have no issue with him making that choice for himself.

A lot of rosters are pretty well set. I wonder what kind of opportunities will be out there for him? Same thing is happening in football. All of these fifth year players now have eligibility but is there a spot for them?

I hope it works out for him and he finds a good landing spot.

One thing about NIL that I actually do like is in college basketball. The pool of players who will make life changing, generational money is very, very small because NBA rosters are tiny compared to every other major professional sport. Hundreds of guys who wouldn't even come close to sniffing a 7 figure year in the NBA, let alone make a team, are getting pay days. I don't care what anyone says, I'm happy for that. Example...Folgeurias.

It would seem to me that if Banks were coming back to Iowa he would already be back at Iowa. Either he and Ben had an agreement that if the court allows it, he can come back, or they didn't. I would actually guess that there was discussion about it in the Spring, but at some point Ben might have let him know that the roster is formed, the team is bonding, and he did not want to disrupt the chemistry now that everyone has been on campus preparing for the last 6 weeks. In any event, I think if it was going to happen, it would have happened by now.

Agree he would be back, however with all he did for Iowa last year I think he deserved a spot if he wanted it. He certainly wouldn't be a detriment to the team. I hope he gets paid by a non-Big Ten school and has a great year.

Agreed that he earned a spot, but the timing mattered. If the rule and court case came down in April or May, Ben would have had time to adjust the roster and fold Banks into the mix. But, adding him now, after the kids have been battling to prove themselves just seems like it could cause problems. I already think we have two more worthy guys than we have rotation spots. If Banks shows up tomorrow, isn't he a presumed starter? Do guys like Thompson or Harris get left out of the rotation and start looking around? Its sticky.

From what I know via my buddy who golfs with an assistant coach, Ben had kind of moved on from Banks from the start this off-season. They weren't recruiting him to come back if he ended up with eligibility. There was a sense that maybe Banks had started moving on before the end of the season (some commitment issues). Hey, the kid played his ass off on the court during games, but also McCollum's system is really demanding. Not hard to imagine he had a little senioritis. There was also a comment from the staff about not wanting to stunt the growth of the younger guys, who they were really excited about and felt were ready to go.

I don't think any bridges were burned, but I think in order to come back Banks was going to have to convince the staff he was super excited to be back, seem willing to accept he may have a somewhat lesser role, and obviously take whatever was offered from a payroll perspective. I don't think the fit was going to be there for next season.

Run BMC has moved on first of all, second...no way would Iowa be willing to pay him what he could get elsewhere. How people even thought this was a thing is ludicrous.

Do most people just not understand the NIL landscape or are fans still 99% made up of the same people who used to bitch about Ferentz being the state's highest paid employee and stealing everyone's tax money?

Ok, break it down for us then :). What is the market for Banks right now? What is Iowa's total payroll? What's its above cap "slush fund" it can tap into? How much does each player on the roster make?

None of us really know. McCollum indicated this spring that they could still add a player if the right one came along. This would seem to suggest there are levers to pull when needed.

My hunch is that Banks wanted to come back for a reasonable offer, one that McCollum likely could have pulled off, but that McCollum declined to go that route.

Folgeurias got $3.5. Banks would likely demand similar. Do you think Iowa would really consider paying Banks that kind of money for one season?

Iowa's spending pool for MBB is in the $8-10M range, so give Banks potentially 40% of that? It isn't rocket surgery.

He might get that, but I sort of doubt it. Folgeurias' agent timed the market well, and Louisville may have been the only school willing to pay $3M plus for his services.

A bunch of other guys were just awarded another year along with Banks. TBD on how many open spots and how much money is out there. I haven't seen Banks mentioned much among the lists of top guys available.

I don't see that Folg is a good comparison at all. First, he went on the open market during the normal window when everyone was shopping for talent. He also is a stretch 4 with shooting range and athleticism. Very sought after. Finally, he had a nice run at the end of the season and I think most coaches looking at him saw a lot of untapped talent that did not fully come out because he was not a great fit with McCollum.

Banks is coming on the market with a ton of similarly situated guys, and when most teams have already set their roster. I actually think this is very much a team/buyer's market for these 2022 kids. Not only are physical rosters set, but I bet most teams have allocated their NIL dollars and don't have spare millions laying around. Banks was a good player, but what is he? An undersized 4? A big 3? A hustle guy? Dudes a total tweener, which is why he didn't even get a sniff at the NBA.

Will he find a home somewhere in college if his agent works to find him the right fit? Probably. Will that be Iowa? Doesn't look that way. Will he get Folg money? I would be flabbergasted if he gets a third of that. He isn't considered a big target. https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/74...e-basketball-best-available-ncaa-eligibility/

Yep, and any team with $3M in unused funds still sitting around (or the ability to quickly access) probably already has a rotation that Banks would likely have difficulty breaking into.

My hunch is that Banks would have gladly come back to Iowa if he was offered a spot in the $750k range. Total guess though. But I would venture that's maybe the type of range that Koch, Tate, Thompson, etc. are in, give or take a couple hundred K.
