$$$$ talks and BS walks

I kind of thought it seemed a little 'out there' too, but I saw some comments from some Michigan or Ohio St. administrator on some panel or as part of some interview who previewed the case they'll make during the next media deal negotiations. It's a real thing.

I think OSU and Michigan will threaten to leave unless the BTen adjusts their revenue sharing to better reflect each institution's value it brings to the new media deal. It would be pretty easy to structure a 'base' appropriation as a % of the media deal to be spread equally among all BTen institutions, and then add some 'bonus' payments above and beyond depending on eyes -- if I was a betting man, which I am, I think both OSU and Michigan will end up staying in the conference, but their strong bargaining position will force some type of hybrid solution like that, which will allow everyone to save face.

That is exactly why I posted this info. Read it on a legit, source as I recall.

OSU and others would be stupid not to be discussing this behind closed doors. And it would not shock me if they made this play. But, I hope it is what it would seem to me: light leverage for a light ask. Meaning, for them to get anything, they have to at least bluff that they might leave. But, no one is going to take that seriously. Not if the current conference alignment remains and the Big10 is negotiating a media rights renewal. There is nowhere for them to go, and everyone knows that.

However, if they seek a modest adjustment of the media rights distribution, they can probably push that through. But, it has to be reasonable. If they want to take all the money and leave peanuts for Purdue, that will be the beginning of the end of the conference. Purdue has to have enough money to compete or the product is going to suck very quickly.

Also, those negotiations would get tricky. We are not just talking about Michigan and OSU as having a demonstrably bigger media presence than the have nots. PSU will want more. UCLA and USC and Oregon are all big names. But, are you giving a bigger share to those western schools that have been in the club for like 5 minutes? I would not. They have never given full media shares to new teams at first and make them earn in. Teams like Iowa and Wisconsin are gonna play the "we helped build this thing card and should get a bigger slice too." It would be a mess.

In my view, the only way to make this work is to hold back a bonus pool of some sort that you use to reward the teams that get the ratings. But, its gotta be like 5 or 10%. You get much more difference than that, we basically have JV and Varsity teams in the same conference.

Or, God forbid, the BT schools should stop spending so much $$ while continuing to cry for more. Same for the rest of the college sports’ programs.

You aint putting that genie back in the bottle unless Congress steps in with a salary cap system. Major college football was in an arms race before NIL (coaches, facilities, stadiums). Now it is feed the beast on steroids.....
