St. Thomas Aquinas Coach Resigns

The coach of national champion St. Thomas Aquinas, George Smith has resigned after 35 years, 6 state titles, 7 runner-ups and two national championships. He has coached at the school since 1975 and is the second winningest coach in Florida high school history with a 366-61 record.

The resignation came as a shock to most and its hard to say whether the move to a new 7A division in Florida had anything to do with it. The only coach with more victorys in Florida is Corky Rogers of the Bolles School in Jacksonville.

Smith is recognized as one of the greatest high school coaches in the nation and it will be interesting to see how this unfolds over the next few weeks.

Average year for him is 10-2. That is unbelievable.

Nice, just in time. I was hoping to maybe get a little pipeline into that program if Rudock had success here. Now who knows if the program will be that good. They might still have talent, but that guy can coach.

Smith is staying on at St. Thomas as Athletic Director....
He is the athletic director and his assistant of 10 years is taking over. His assistant, I don't recall his name, has been the DC and over the last 4-5 years has given up an average of 9.4 pts a game. He is incredible and had a chance to leave next year but apparantly he knew what was going on. We will still have a pipeline because their is mutual respect between Coach Smith and KF. Just sayin we will have a chance at some great players in the next few years. Jake Rudock will be the best recruiter we have in S. Florida.
