Some early Iowa preseason rankings

When a team enters a season with National Championship aspirations and winds up in the Sun Bowl after the BCS head honchos have had there way, then there is a natural let down.

No cut and dried predictions here...

A team without receivers is, well, in this age...at a disadvantage...

Waiting to see something from Kirk...other than cupcake victories...

If it happens...I will be impressed...show me...

The National Championship aspirations will also come down to whether an undefeated Hawkeye team meets a highly rated Pac-10 team in the Rose Bowl Game, or whether the Bowl Coalition will screw us over by setting up a Sugar Bowl or Orange Bowl match that will put their champion over the top when the AP final votes start to roll in.

Iowa preseason rankings range from 35th to 44th in the country.

Predicted finishes in Big Ten West range from 2nd to 4th

NW and Wisc typically are ranked higher. Neb and Minn lower, although it varies.

I think if Iowa can somehow finish 2nd in the West I would call that a succesful season.
Big unknown is which team gets to blow our doors off in the bowl game...
Well, there it is.
The scab from my gut-wrenching trip to Pasadena just got ripped off...again.

Smoke and Mirrors "success"...

Exposed with speed by a legitimate bowl opponent...

Predictable, but not pleasant...

You wait for those... personally I saw them beat #3 and undefeated Michigan just last season.

I ask you, what mortal can ever predict Iowa's success?

ROFLMAO!!!!!!!!!

Sad because it is so true. Many talk of IF we can finish in second place in our division it's an achievement. I guess I have trouble with that. I think back to the days when ten teams (or eleven if you want to include Penn State) competed against each other in one conference and one division. If we went back to that standard I would have try to be fair and say this; In my opinion the East division is so much more stronger than the west and Iowa would be very fortunate to finish in third or fourth place in that division. Throw in Wisconsin and that possibly pushes Iowa into a fifth place finish going up against the entire conference in ONE division.

Somehow I find that distasteful and unimpressive. Yet some seem perfectly content with it. This is not the spirit of true competition. A true competitor sets goals to be the very best. To win an outright conference title and contend for a national title. That should be the goal every single year. Is it obtainable? Of course not but it should be the goal and hope of everybody coach player and fan of Iowa football. Should it be achieved at least one every so many years for each team in the conference? I guess it depends on what should be expected from any coach in any sport that is paid one of the top salaries in the sport.

Penn State, Rutgers, Nebraska, and Maryland moved us up from ten teams in the conference to fourteen. So asking a program and its coach to win the conference at least once every 15 years is totally reasonable unless your a bottom feeder program. In that case do t expect it to ever happen. I feel Iowa is anything but a bottom feeder.

I guess I can only hope that the new coaching staff brings a unique chemistry to the program and catches lightning in a bottle. As Iowa fans we all deserve to get to experience it at least once. I am hoping for the best. If it's the same ole same ole I will have a feeling of total hopelessness with this coaching staff.

Stop being a nattering nabob of negativity. It's way too early for that. At this pace, your head will explode before the season even starts.
Yeah, but our head coach is Kurt Ferentz, isn't he? The poster should be negative about Iowa's chances.

On a side note, at least Iowa's head coach and Michigan's head coach are inept.

Harbaugh is the George Ravelling of coaches. Can recruit. Can't coach.

Ole Kurt is at the very least top 5 coach in the B1G and top 25 nationally, what a disadvantage he brings to the school.

He can't coach nor can he recruit. Good thing Ferentz coaches in the West division of the B1G. Ivy League or Mid-American conferences would also be good fits for Kurt.

I take back the Mid-American Conference suggestion as a good fit for Ferentz. He is flummoxed by the spread offense.

I wouldn't sleep on this Iowa team. Sure there are holes to fill and question marks all over the place, but with a veteran offensive line and one of the best RBs in the B1G, the offense at least has a solid core to work from. The defense has a solid core returning as well.

One of my friends is good at photoshop and he made me a bunch of preseason college football magazine covers with the Iowa Hawkeyes billed as National Championship favorites with the inside track to the playoffs, the Heisman trophy, and an undefeated season. I am going to frame them and hang them on my wall now.

I think their chances of coming in third in the West are a bit higher than coming in second or fourth. The most likely order being: Wisconsin; Northwestern; Iowa; Nebraska. Wisconsin is the favorite with Northwestern, Iowa, and Nebraska being closely matched. Minnesota, Purdue, and Illinois are at the bottom, fighting for respectability.
