Some early Iowa preseason rankings

2nd would be a success for this season and I am about as realistic as humanly possible with my expectations for Iowa football. With the division Iowa plays in - winning the West every season *should* be the expectation and with Nebraska down, Minne down (or getting a new coach), Wisci losing what they lost and Northwestern always being a crap shoot, that expectation of being right in the thick of the West race remains this season for me.

I still think if QB play develops, BF's offensive schemes pan out (hey they have to be better than Davis 120th ranked offense), this may be a special Iowa team. A lot of ifs.

This is not just summer hubris and blue sky predictions, but I think Iowa can challenge for the West title this year.

What am I saying, of course it's hubris and blue sky.

On College Sports Nation this morning, Phil Steele had us going 5th in the West. Says the combination of breaking in a new QB combined with our toughest crossover games at home (OSU & PSU), which requires us to get wins on the on the road, will be our undoing. Says we should have an overall solid team, but schedule will break us.

Sounds like Phil Steele's take in 2015 too. Haven't we challenged for the West title each of the last three years? We were right there and a break here or there and it happens. I think this year is no different. PSU at home is the key to the season...early game, momentum/confidence game. I'm sure it's circled on the Iowa board too after the beat down last year.

KF needs to start being successful...outside of a soft schedule and fantasy talk...

Bowl games have been embarrassing, hideous, a joke...laughable...

Hope we are surprised...

Pretty hard to argue with this........almost the perfect storm. Sometimes Kirk pulls the rabbit out the hat in challenging times but I'm having difficulty seeing that this season. 2018 schedule pays us back in kind and then some. I see another trough and peak graph forming.

Bowl games have been a joke and I know you are straight up trolling but he's been one of the more successful coaches in CFB the last 20 years.

He has been successful by objective measures. Not unbelievably, New Enland Patriots type successful, but successful nevertheless.

We've had three embarrassing bowl games the last three seasons but have had some successful one in the past.

LOL, he just took the school to it's first undefeated regular season in school history 2 seasons ago and finished 9th in the nation and won National and B1G COY.... I sure hope he finds some success

Essentially, the west winner the last 2 years has come down to who wins the Iowa-Wisconsin game

These preseason rankings are important when it comes to slotting between the different undefeated teams towards the end of the regular season. But to guarantee our playoff selection the Iowa Hawkeyes still need to go undefeated and win the B1G Championship game.

Yep, just like everybody else.

Except for, of course, Ohio St, who somehow got into the playoffs laat year even though OSU lost head to head to PSU and PSU actually won the BigTen.

To be fair psu lost to Pitt and Michigan too. Most teams in every conference have to go undefeated to make the playoffs, unless the circumstance that your schedule or resume trumps others.
