Send the Illini Home Hanging Their Heads in SHAME Game Thead

Illinois played lights out. Unheard of to be 9 of 9 from 3. I see some are critical of Heiden sitting. Substituting Houston for defense paid dividends. Iowa's defense improved in the 4th quarter. You don't win many games with the opponent perfect from 3. Iowa looked slow on D until crunch time.

Isn't Senior Night historically the last home game of the season?
Worked out better to do it for the Michigan game on Sunday. Easier for parents to travel on weekends. Illinois game had a late start at 8pm. All the ceremonies would have went late if they had senoir day against Illinois.

And it looks like the Iowa seniors will get at least one more home game since Iowa will be a top 4 seed in the NCAA tourney.

That was stressful. Good lord. As the 2nd half got going things didn't look good for us. What's the record for a team hitting consecutive 3s anyway?

I know a lot of folks are 2nd guessing Jan on her sitting Ava for a chunk of that 4th q. My biggest issue was when we were up 3 after Hannah missed that FT that instead of defending them straight up like we did (and luckily Kylie drew that foul) that we didn't foul them. We even had a foul to give with only 3 team fouls at that point. I say let them dribble it up to half court and their was like 6 or less seconds left then foul em. Then make em inbound it and do it again to put them at the line with like 3 seconds left or so.

I'm a big proponent of when up 3 in situations like that you foul. IL hitting a 3 was the only thing that coulda hurt us so why let em even shoot one? Well we got lucky they never got the chance as they did that dribble handoff thing where Kylie sacrificed her body and got the call.

Illinois outscored Iowa by 27 points on 58% shooting from beyond the 3 point line yet somehow Iowa won the game.
I watched it but I still don't know how we won.. Looking at the box score to make up the difference with all the 3s IL made we only hit 3 more FGs total but we got 14-18 from the FT line. Making twice as many FTs as the opponents attempt is a nice recipe usually.

Iowa only had 11 TOs which is pretty good for us. IL had 14. I don't think we've won that game within the game very many times this yr and it's obviously a good thing we did. With how IL was shooting giving them extra possessions woulda been bad.

Those last couple possessions where Hannah got that steal and IL set that illegal screen was the difference along with us hitting like 5 of our last 6 FTs was what put it away. Woulda been interesting had IL gotten shots up both of those possessions instead what woulda happened

Game like that is why I have to take BP medication.....I am certain that neighbors across the street heard me shout "guard the (effin) 3 point shooter" more than once. I was surprised Jan didn't take a time out to stem the tide, but I guess we needed them at the end to advance the inbounds, but even that had its stressful moments.

I guess I didn't realize that Ada was such a defensive liability- I can understand that she is a marked person for ticky tack fouls, but even so, none of the ladies were defending the Illini 3 point shots in the 2nd half. That was unbelievable shooting, and how Carver is so kind to the 3 point shot (except us last night) I find hard to fathom. Gotta get Chit Chat outta her slump- we need her shooting.

At first I was wondering about the substitution, but agree with you completely that it really helped the defense...and of course we won!

I was wondering about that too. I saw some of the taller Illinois players driving to the basket against a shorter Journey Houston, and of course I was thinking, why in the world is Heiden not in the game. But then the Illini would miss and Houston would get the rebound, and I would be like, well I guess it worked out. But was it good strategy or just luck?

Speaking of luck, Iowa's strategy to get Illinois to shoot from 3-point range probably was a good strategy that would work most of the time. Who would have thought they would hit 9 3-pointers in a row? Even if wide open, who hits 9 3-pointers in a row? Sure, I have seen Caitlin Clark do it in practice videos when nobody is guarding her but that's Caitlin Clark.

I was wondering why we didn't use that strategy also

Obviously they couldn't miss a three, give them two free throws instead

They were 7-8 from the line but only two points

We shot 58% from the field and were ice cold from threeland: 2-7 for 29%

I think that is one of Journey's talents and apparently it was good strategy, Ava was rested and ready to go

She dominated inside the last couple of minutes

I almost threw a full bottle of Dos Equis at the TV but restrained my self and twiddled my thumbs instead

Yeah, that's the point I keep getting stuck on. Heiden was scoring at will against Illinois, even in the first half. So why in the world was Ava sitting on the bench so much in the 2nd half? Unless there was something wrong with her. I heard Ava had a little bug on Sunday against Michigan. Is it possible she was still sick 4 days later? If so, that's one serious bug.

From what Jan said in her presser she noticed Ava was moving down the court slow. Ava has been ill. Also Jan was talking about Chit Chat suffering from leg cramps and pushed through on her free throws. They've been trying to figure out how to remedy her leg cramps. I'm sure this is why Chit has been shooting short on her perimeter shots.

Good points! Nobody saw the Illini hitting all of those three pointers. That usually means a win for that team, but Iowa weathered the storm pretty well.
