Rivalry games. Hate, not friendly

Im watching the espn documentary of the bama/auburn rivalry, and just amazed at how much the fans down there hate eachother. Same goes for the mich/O$u game. I really would like to be in a rivalry like that. But we cant be in one with ISU
i am sick and tired of the cy-hawk game being called a friendly rivalry. I really dont respect anything about them.

And as for Nebraska, even though it just started, this rivalry has a chance to be a heated one. But for that to happen it needs to be back and forth, they win, we win.

What do you think? Would you want to be in a rivalry thats as heated as the bama/auburn rivalry? Or be in a rivalry like cy-hawk which is "friendly"
 


No. I'd rather have the rivalry be intense, yet friendly, and at the very least, civil. Case in point:
I'm from Iowa. I didn't go to Iowa, but I follow their sports just the same. A few years back, a relative of mine was playing baseball for Ohio State. I went to the game when they played Iowa, and wore the Ohio State gear in Iowa City. Yes, it was baseball and not football, but the cool thing was how great the Iowa fans were on the whole. They were friendly, and very nice.
My folks went a year later to see my relative play against Michigan; as they happened to be in town in Ann Arbor. (we also have relatives in the Detroit area) That day, they told me that the amount of verbal abuse shouted at the players and the fans from OSU was obscene, and sickening.
Rivalries are good in that they harbor a love for the game, while having a mutual amount of loathing, yet RESPECT for the opponent. On the first day of the baseball season this year, a SF Giants fan was severely beaten by a couple of Dodger fans. That guy is still in the hospital. Is that level of hate in a rivalry something that Hawkeye fans really want to have? Really? The day that happens is the day I stop following anything associated with the University of Iowa.
 


I like where the nebraska rivalry is headed. Some of the nebby fans on here are respectful and I hope we can be respectful as well, but at the same time I want to love beating then and absolutely hate losing to them... As long as both sides are still respectful. Like the guy above mentioned the fan that was beaten... I don't want to ever have to worry about that or have anyone else have to worry about that.

I'd prefer that things stay at least civil. Save the pure hatred for the rednecks in Alabama. I plan on working with people who are alumni/fans of other schools. I'd rather not despise them based on something as ultimately trivial as a football game.
 


The hatred and abuse that comes from rivalries is probably my least favorite thing about sports. I am glad that Iowa doesn't really have that with anyone, and I would like that to continue.
 






When the other team wins most of the time, it is easy to be friendly on the other's board...even a bit condescending.
 


I watched that last night about Auburn and Alabama. Im going to tell you right now you will never get that type of rivalry with Nebraska. No one will though, they just wont. Nebraska fans just aren't that intense with that. Nebraskas most heated rivalry was with Oklahoma and it wasn't even close to a Alabama vs Auburn or Michigan vs Ohio St. Most Nebraska fans that i know aren't like that. And most of the Iowa fans i know arent like that as well. Of the top rivals Nebraska had with Oklahoma, Missouri, and Colorado none of those came close. I think rivalries like the ones mentioned above only happen to a few teams. Here is an article on the Kansas vs Missouri rivalry. These are how real rivalrys are created.

I was born in Huntsville, AL and got the chance to see the Bama/Auburn rivalry up close. I don't think anything else in the country compares. I have relatives that haven't spoken to each other for over a decade because they are on different sides of the fence. I really don't think they'd take the time to pee on the other's teeth if their gums were on fire.

After my parents divorced, my mom moved me and my sisters to Iowa because she wanted us educated in the midwest. But I'm glad we left Bama for many reasons. Too much hate in that state.

I would prefer that the Iowa/Nebraska rivalry (if it ever is a rivalry) would be like ours was with OU. Hopefully, the games will have tremendous meaning, and there will be deep respect between the programs and the fans.

As many on here have said, its just football. Yes, we all love football, but once that game is over, there are many more important things to deal with on a daily basis. It's not worth hating your co-worker because he is a fan of Iowa (or Nebraska).

That sums it up right there, you have to have a real rube fan base, in every sense of the word, to have that kind of Bama/Auburn hated rivalry. Education in general will weed out too many of the rubes for it to work here - thankfully, and yes I lived in south for three years to see it first hand.

Kind of like the announcers saying they stayed in the same hotel as ISU in OK the other night and the fire alarms were pulled 4 times that night? Sounds bush league to me. I know this is'nt the first time people have done this. I remember when I was in Salt Lake and the Bulls were playing the Jazz. The guy on the radio, said what hotel it was and suggested having a loud parking lot party and blasting horns and car alarms all night. I just think it's kind of low class and I have never condoned or taken part in any such way. I guess it's not my concern if others do, but it still seems low class.
 


Outside of the ones I know personally I utterly hate the ISU fan base. As far as I am concerned let the in state rivalry get ugly.
 


I never understood why I'm supposed to hate someone from the same state as me, and they love college football. That's the guy that should be my friend.

Save your hate for people who deserve it, such as republicans.

Well I'd rather be civil and act like a human being than be better at football. At the end of the day it's just a game. I like what the game means to me now and I don't need an alabama/auburn rivalry to enjoy being an iowa fan. Just my opinion though.
 


The Roll Tide/War Eagle special made the whole rivalry seem petty, not intense. They tried making it seem serious but in the end you just shake your head at how stupid the whole thing really is. I have a Steelers shirt that packer morons would always comment on at the bars in Iowa. "Remember when the Packers beat the Steelers?" "Yeah, I'm not a Steelers fan so how about you leave me alone?" "Oh..."

Is that what you want from Nebraska fans? I don't.
