Pre-season coaches poll

What do you mean no Iowa? Iowa was 27th in the also recieving votes category, effectively making Iowa the 54th ranked team in the country.

In the big ten, NW, Neb and Minn all got more votes than Iowa. But at least Iowa got more votes than MSU.

This just is going to be a rebuilding year. A lot of new skill position players and lack of depth in some key area's. I'm treating this season like last seasons hoops team. Compete, show improvement, play everyone you can and get ready for next season. Also, I wonder if the perceived impact of Butler and Quarrels were considered. While I don't think they'll improve Iowa by 3 wins, they will provide Iowa more chances to win a game.

Well...we are officially flying under the radar.

We say that every year. That Iowa is rebuilding. I think Iowa is opposite of most teams in that when Iowa is rebuilding they are rebuilding their O and D lines with younger or new players and RB position. The WR position should AT LEAST be the same but should be an upgrade over the last couple years with better players and O'keefe and BF not running the show. So not really rebuilding there. The QB in Iowa's system typically has been a game manager to run the team and not give the ball away.

So, I don't think Iowa is really rebuilding as they pretty much have their line play and RB situation the same, which is where Iowa is the strongest. That is the foundation of Iowa's play/style.

Well...i get it. But qb and WR are some legitimate concerns, along with our deep coverage. We have vulnerabilities. And if our qb remains a game manager, we will never have high level WR talent. We will perpetually be where we're at now. I think QB play (hand-in-hand with play calling) is THE question mark, this season.

Good points by everyone. My gut says we are going to surprise more than just a few teams.

One of the best offensive lines in college football and an explosive backfield. Those two factors alone can make even an average QB look damn good.

I will say that with the additions of Butler and Quarells, we could be more potent on offense. It depends on how these guys are used. If Butler is used in a rotation with AW, then I feel like he wouldn't be utilized to maximize his presence. By using JB and AW in the backfield at the same time (not always but 60% of the time), then we could be very unpredictable. That would also allow for TY and TA to still get some carries. If Quarrels is used as a downfield blocker instead of as a downfield receiver, then, it's the same old same old.

So, now, think of this: JB, AW, MQ, MVP and NF on the field at the same time. You can motion either JB or AW to the slot, or you could shift to put NF wide and bring Quarrels to a tight slot. We could get creative. But will we??

Extra wins come with creativity.

I couldn't agree more and I am seriously hoping it does happen, in fact I expect it to.

If it doesn't happen now it NEVER, EVER will.

This season will likely be the window in to BF as an OC and then if he moves on to a HC position somewhere. I think he needs to show Iowa fans he's different than dad. I sure hope that's the case, anyway.

We are going to beat Penn State.

I always thought the term "rebuilding" was a hell of an insult to the Srs, Jrs and Sophs in the program that have been working and practicing the last few years. In college you're constantly "rebuilding"...20-25% of your players are replaced every year.

Lol, we all know how much KF likes to upset Penn State. I always laughed at old Joe's face every time we beat him.
Think Jewel isn't going to put up bulletin board material about the Hawks quitting?

Revenge game.
