PP presents KF with game ball

I've never seen an emotional PP. Maybe at times over the years in the locker rooms he has been and they never put it out or I just never saw it. But this was a first for me. I figure it's pretty rare for PP to get emotional. I still maintain that this will be it for KF after this yr. Till KF hires a new OC I'll stay on that hill. (I'll be happy as hell to be wrong)

It goes to show how tight this staff and team are. This is a theme that seems to be year after year with the Hawkeyes. A true genuine moment and spoke volumes of the relationship Phil has with Kirk and the players.

The moment on the sideline with Kirk and Brian was emotional, but also seeing Phil and Brian share a moment as well as the players and Brian.

In many ways, this team has been super special. The distractions and the adversity that this team has gone through has been something we have not seen in quite some time. (I'm thinking maybe when we had all those running backs go down and Paki O' Meara and Rick Bayless era.)

Hopefully, we can complete the regular season with a win over Nebby. After all that has happened, ten wins is almost unthinkable.

I bitch and moan on here sometimes, acting like my opinion means something more than nothing. But I have never invested in anything in my life to the extent that these guys (coaches and players) are invested in this team. You can quibble about some of the details and things they could've/should've done better, but KF builds a special culture year after year, and we are really going to miss that when it is gone.

I keep thinking that, too. And @Hawkfnntn has been predicting since the start of the year. I hope we are all wrong, I could use a few more years of this (but with a more competent offense).
I could still be way wrong and the guy has 4 more yrs in him and he becomes the all time BIG wins leader. All I've done is see how the stars are all lined up. I just don't think we should be surprised if he does hang it up. And if this off season drags on without him having hired an OC after signing day in early Feb that would be telling... Timeline wise I really hope we know one way or the other before that.

That was really cool. I agree it just seems like they are in the know about something. I think KF is also on track to hit that special win total for Hall of Fame.

I'm pretty sure that KF responded to PP paraphrase "I couldn't have done it without you.". It is who KF is and he has spent his entire coaching career taking bullets for his team and coaches and deflecting any compliments about his accomplishments. That's what coaches do and he is a damn good college football coach.

If I could speak with him I'd like to tell him "Ya know coach, sometimes, just sometimes, it's alright to pat yourself on the back and say I did a damn good job."

I don't have any sense to whether Kirk comes back or not. But in my opinion, whenever it does happen, we won't see it coming. And I also think that personal coaching records and more money have zero impact on Kirk's retirement decision. I think he's primarily concerned that he finds his career so satisfying and meaningful, and isn't sure he'll have anything to replace that with and worries how that might negatively impact him.

KF also had a couple grand kids on the field after the game. (presumably Brians but I don't know if those were his. I do know he has kiddos though) I can't remember KF having done that before either. If that was his last home game it'd make sense... A part of me wishes we'd just already know that but a part of me is like damn it just let him do it on his timeline whatever it is. If anyone has ever earned that it's him

Man, I texted the same thing to buddies. Not to sound too creepy, but he lives by my parents and I think most of his kids (he has at least four) are girls, including the two oldest. I sort of wonder if those were one of Kirk's daughter's kids (because they looked like two slightly older boys, at least one was)...neither here nor there, but I noticed too.

Kirk has said he is coming back. I will take him at his word. And, even if some may think I am crazy, I think he loves what he does too much to stop now. It is not about the $$. It is not about setting records. It is not about being stubborn.
He just loves to coach.
I agree with all that but he's also a savvy guy (and one that doesn't want the attention on him). He'll always say he is coming back next year (until the day he has a press conference in January some year saying he is stepping down).

I think you nailed it. It is love of the game, the players, and the university. There is so much we don't know and don't see, but see the kids rally around him and the rest of the staff. That says something.

Those kids love their coaches and it's reciprocated by the staff. The culture built here is something special. Let's hope it continues for a while. We won't truly appreciate it until it's over.

The media also said after the game that Kirk was running late for all his media obligations. He was in the locker room an extra long time. How long I'm not sure but it was noticeable enough that it was brought up.

Great post. Especially "taking the bullets" while deflecting the compliments. That's what head coaches are supposed to do, but I think KF goes above and beyond that.

Players have bought into the culture that staff has fostered. They know they all have roles and rarely do you see the "I or me" and instead you see the "we". Listening to players interview, they talk about "team" and talk about everyone contributing. That's special.

What he's built at Iowa doesn't go on everywhere else. I'd say anywhere else. And if KF is going to continue coaching that's his #1 reason for doing so. That'd be really damn hard to walk away from. Especially if you know you can still do it. I still feel like he will but I really hope I'm wrong

I think that is the one thing that could bring him back.
