tOH yeah!!

Great pitching and a couple of guys with their first HRs of the year.

RPI actually liked Michigan’s home win over Rutgers and S. Carolina’s loss to Missouri better than Iowa’s win on the road.

Dropped two spots to #62 but +16 from a week ago.

McDonald Leads Iowa to Game 1 Win Over Ohio State

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Behind senior Cole McDonald’s eight-inning, eight-strikeout performance, the University of Iowa baseball team won the series opener, 4-2, over Ohio State on Friday night at Bill Davis Stadium.

Ohio State (23-19, 6-7) out-hit Iowa (25-15, 10-6) 7-6, but two of the Hawkeyes’ hits were home runs. Freshman Brendan Sher and junior Zeb Adreon hit their first career home runs to power Iowa to its 10th Big Ten win of the season.

McDonald, who had four strikeouts in the first two innings, earned his fourth win of the season and posted his fourth straight quality start in the Big Ten. The New Hampton, Iowa, native worked around a single and a walk in the fourth inning to strand two Buckeyes before retiring nine straight batters into the seventh inning.

The right-hander surrendered his first run of the game in the eighth inning and trotted out for the ninth before allowing a leadoff double and handing the ball over to closer Grant Leonard.

McDonald’s final line consisted of two runs allowed on six hits over eight innings with eight strikeouts to only one walk. His ERA dropped to a season-best 3.66.

Leonard surrendered one hit, allowing one inherited runner to score, but retired the next three to earn his 10th save of the season.

Iowa’s offense was quiet early, but the bottom of the order, starting with Sher, picked up the slack. The Indianola, Iowa, native hit a solo shot to right center field on a 2-0 count to break the scoreless tie.

In the fifth, Iowa went ahead 2-0 on a sacrifice fly off the bat of senior Chris Whelan, scoring Adreon who doubled to leadoff the fifth.

Adreon, a Pleasantville, Iowa, native, continued his big day with a two-run home run in the top of the ninth, giving Iowa a 4-1 lead.

“Zeb Adreon had a big, big night for us,” head coach Rick Heller said. “He hits a double and then hits a two-run homer late to give us a little cushion going into the ninth.”

QUOTING HEAD COACH RICK HELLER

“It was a great win for us. It was a big Friday night for Cole McDonald; he went out and gave us eight innings and was dominant most of the night. I am pleased with Cole's performance.

“We scrapped offensively. Garrett (Burhenn) was really good, especially early. He punched out the first five guys he faced. We finally got stuff going when we got him into the stretch. It was a gutty effort by our guys. We played great defense all night, I was happy with the effort."

OF NOTE…

  • It is the fourth straight game Iowa has hit a home run -- the longest streak of the season.
  • Iowa’s bottom of the order had five of Iowa’s six hits.
  • Leonard’s 10 saves are tied for the second most in a single season at Iowa, while his 12 career saves move him into a tie for seventh.
  • Whelan’s single in the top of the eighth extended his on-base streak to 20 games.

Saturday’s game two will start at 2:05 p.m. (CT) from Bill Davis Stadium. Sophomore Cam Baumann (3-2, 5.11 ERA) will start for the Hawkeyes.

I'm starting to wonder if Cole McDonald will get drafted. He's putting up a solid year and teams like drafting Friday night college pitchers. I can see him getting drafted in the 9th or 10th round, rounds where MLB teams like to draft college seniors that don't require much of a signing bonus.

I think that is from a week-to-week cuz before last week they were at 78 and then won 2-of-3 vs. Nebby plus midweek win.

Before beating OSU they were at #60

Big win. I am, however, a little worried about the trend of following a big offensive game (double-digit runs), with a close, low-scoring loss. Go Hawks! Get the sweep and we are back in the race to win the BIG

Hawkeyes Put Buckeyes Away Late, Win Game 2 and Series

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The University of Iowa baseball team scored four runs in the seventh and ninth inning to secure its fifth straight Big Ten series win in an 11-4 victory over Ohio State on Saturday afternoon at Bill Davis Stadium.

The Hawkeyes scored one run in the first, and the game was tied 3-3 through six innings, but Iowa outscored Ohio State, 8-1, in the final three innings to improve to 26-15 overall and 11-6 in the Big Ten.

Iowa used five hits and one Buckeye error to score four runs in the seventh. Defensive substitute Justin Jenkins and pinch hitter Zeb Adreon were in the middle of Iowa’s attack with each recording a hit and an RBI in the inning.

The Hawkeyes put the game away in the ninth with four more runs. Adreon added two more RBIs on a double to right field to finish 2-for-2 with three RBIs. Senior Chris Whelan and junior Austin Martin drove in Iowa’s final two runs of the game.

Eight of Iowa’s 11 runs were scored against Ohio State’s bullpen after Iowa bounced starter Seth Lonsway, who pitched 5 1/3 innings.

For the first six innings, it was an even game with Iowa scoring the game’s first run via an Izaya Fullard RBI single. Fullard, a sophomore from North Liberty, Iowa, went 3-for-5 with two doubles and two runs scored, and was the catalyst for the Hawkeye offense. In the seventh inning, it was Fullard’s RBI double that started Iowa’s onslaught of offense.

Ohio State’s lone offensive outburst came in the third inning after sophomore starter Cam Baumann and the Hawkeyes escaped a bases-loaded jam an inning earlier. Baumann surrendered a Brady Cherry two-run home run to dead center to put the Buckeyes up 2-1 after three, but Ohio State couldn’t build on that.

Baumann, the southpaw from Fairfield, Iowa, limited the damage and scattered six innings over a grind-it-out five innings, while striking out two of the last three batters he faced.

Baumann handed the ball over to senior Jason Foster, who recorded two outs in the sixth, before head coach Rick Heller made the change to Kyle Shimp, who earned the win despite only recording one out.

Junior Trace Hoffman shut down the Buckeye offense in the seventh and eighth innings, allowing only one hit and one run, while junior Adam Ketelsen pitched a scoreless ninth.

QUOTING HEAD COACH RICK HELLER

“Our guys came out and it was a tough battle for six innings -- a 3-3 game. Our offense woke up in the seventh. We had some guys with some big clutch hits and two-out hits. We hit a lot of doubles in the second half of the game, which was good to see.

"I am happy with how the offense played today. We faced a good lefty starting out and I was hoping we could get his pitch count up fairly soon and get him out of the game. He was tough on us, but we were able to do that and have some success against their bullpen. We’re ready to go for tomorrow.

“We’re playing pretty good baseball right now and we’re catching some breaks. We’re getting some two-out hits. It feels good. We labored a good chunk of the season where runs were tough to come by and we weren’t getting the two-out hit with guys making plays against us. It’s turned our way.”

OF NOTE…

  • It’s Iowa’s first series win in Columbus since 2011.
  • Iowa has won five straight series for the first time since 2015 when the Hawkeyes won eight straight series, finished 41-18, and qualified for an NCAA Regional.
  • It’s Iowa’s first back-to-back games without errors since March 22-23 against Indiana.
  • Whelan’s on-base streak is up to 21 games, while Fullard’s on-base streak has risen to 10 games.
  • It’s Adreon’s third game with three or more RBIs.
  • Freshman Brendan Sher is on a four-game hitting streak.
UP NEXT

Sunday’s series finale will start at 11:05 a.m. (CT) due to Iowa’s travel curfew. Junior Grant Judkins (4-4, 1.88 ERA) will start for the Hawkeyes.

Iowa lost 5-1. It's not a "bad loss" but they missed a huge opportunity to increase their chances for an at large.

Hawkeyes Fall in Game 3, Win 5th Straight B1G Series

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The University of Iowa baseball team (26-16, 11-7) dropped the series finale, 5-1, to Ohio State (24-20, 7-8) on Sunday at Bill Davis Stadium.

The Hawkeyes couldn’t complete the series sweep, but picked up their fifth straight Big Ten series win and second series win on the road. At 11-7 in the Big Ten, Iowa is in sole possession of fourth place in the conference standings.

Iowa’s offense couldn’t get anything going offensively despite drawing seven walks.

Junior Grant Judkins (4-5) was issued the loss, but recorded his sixth quality start of the season, going six innings, allowing four runs (three earned) with four strikeouts. After striking out the side in the first inning, Judkins allowed a run in the second and third innings.

With the Buckeyes lead 2-0 going into the sixth inning, Ohio State added two runs via three two-out hits to take a 4-0 lead.

The Hawkeyes left 11 runners on base, including seven in the first six innings. Iowa’s offense showed life in the seventh inning, putting the first two batters on base on a Justin Jenkins bunt single and a Mathew Sosa walk. Jenkins came around to score on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Mitchell Boe.

Junior Austin Martin struck out with the bases loaded to end the seventh. In the bottom of the seventh, Iowa had a scary moment with Boe and Zeb Adreon colliding in short right field. A run scored on the collision and Boe was forced to leave the game.

Senior Luke Farley doubled with one out in the eighth, but he was left stranded. Iowa’s last comeback effort was quickly thwarted after Sosa was picked off by the catcher on a throw back after singling the pitch before.

Redshirt junior Grant Leonard pitched the final inning for Iowa, allowing no runs to extend his scoreless innings streak to 14 games.

QUOTING HEAD COACH RICK HELLER

“It is same story as last weekend. Today doesn’t ruin the fact we had a good weekend and took another series, but it’s disappointing how we played today. Offensively, we weren’t sharp. They gave us seven walks and we weren’t able to turn it in to any runs. It was a tough day to hit with the wind blowing in strong. We hit a couple balls early right at them that got caught. We didn’t really kick the ball around, but the free bases we had today, all of them led to runs. It’s a rough day for us. Things didn’t click.”

OF NOTE…

  • Adreon’s pinch-hit double was his third of the series.
  • Senior Chris Whelan’s 21-game on-base streak was snapped.

Iowa resumes play with a midweek contest at Duane Banks Field against Western Illinois on Tuesday with a 6:05 p.m. (CT) first pitch. On Wednesday, the Hawkeyes will travel to Rosemont, Illinois, to play Northwestern in a nonconference matchup at Impact Field.

Did Ben Norman get hurt?
Is that why he got PHed for?

If not, that’s a questionable sub cuz the Adreon RF that came in for him didn’t get to a ball that Norman probably would have. Cost a couple of runs. Then the collision between Boe and Adreon.
