Long story....but I lived for three miserable years in Indiana (near the Muncie area)(83-86). Knight and Alford reigned supreme.
Alford's home town gym in New Castle seated 7800+ fans and was always full, extraordinary considering New Castle's population is around 17K. I've been in New Castle probably two dozen times and can still see the "Home of Kent Benson" and "Home of Steve Alford" signs as you come into NC from any direction. I've also seen the Alford shrine in the New Castle motel (which boasts a huge tennis shoe outside to mark the location).
Needless to say, I get a little more pleasure when Iowa beat IU in basketball.
