Now that's a "Whoa"...

Phil Parker on his defensive line, "I think this is the best we've been up front as a whole since I've been defensive coordinator."

Phil ain't one to mince words and typically plays things close to the vest, so this quote today is pretty darn telling....

Time to place a bet on Iowa's win total...

I'm on record with 12-2. I could see it maybe being 11-3 if the refs steal one from us, but there's absolutely no way we won't win the West, hence the 14 games in the record. The West is the crappiest division in big time football and we will curb stomp every team from the West.

The lack of depth at DT has been my biggest concern. I'll take this as serious improvement made in this area. #fingerscrossed

That 2009 line was pretty damned salty, but I think Norm was still coordinator at that point, so sadly, I think Phil has picked a low bar of comparison. Also, that 2003 line was ridiculously salty, but again, Norm was running the show.

Meh, Phil can scheme around that. Just run the Raider package and no one will notice what we have at tackle.

That 2010 d-line had 4 pros on it and Broderick Binns wasn't exactly a scrub. Stop the run and generate a pass rush with the front 4 with some level of consistency.....you get that and the Iowa D will be fine.

Just to put this in context, Parker became DC in 2012. I will list the DLs since 2013 as a basis of comparison (listed the top contributors to the best of my memory):

2013: Dom Alvis (sr), Carl Davis (jr), Drew Ott (so), Louis Trinca-Pasat (jr)

2014: Nate Meier (jr), Carl Davis (sr), Drew Ott (jr), LTP (sr)

2015: Meier (sr), Bazata (RS so), Faith Ekakatie (jr), Jaleel Johnson (jr), Drew Ott (sr; obviously missed last 2/3 of season), Parker Hesse (RS fr)

2016: Anthony Nelson (RS fr), Matt Nelson (RS so), Bazata (RS jr), Ekakatie (sr), Jaleel Johnson (sr), Parker Hesse (RS so)

Some of those lines performed pretty well, but none of them jump out at you talent-wise like the '09 or '10 DLs would. I would say the best line listed would be '15 prior to Drew Ott's injuries. To think this line might be better than that is exciting, but also not too mind-blowing.

As Jon mentioned on the podcast, last year's DL was 13th best in allowed scoring... I'd take that this year...
Have a better showing against PSU and you're looking at a potential top 10 ranking.

It wasn't mind blowing for me, but it certainly was an eye opener compared to what I would have initially thought was a weak link....plus the fact that Parker isn't typically one to throw around a lot of hyperbole...

Agreed. I was more excited before I went back through and looked at the specific units he would be using for comparison (thinking back to the 09-10 years that were loaded with NFL talent), but as Husky28 said, there have been some plenty salty lines over the past 5 years. If this DL can be better than those, with our experience at LB and potential in the backend, it should be fun to watch.

I am curious to see what the Hawks D does in obvious passing situations. They should have quite a few options available to them.
