Norvell new RB coach

Hard to see how this isn't a pretty impressive addition to the staff. Recruited and coached by Hayden, a key leader on the '85 Rose Bowl team, a bunch of stops in the NFL and college, including OC at Oklahoma...had to rebuild a team as head coach at Nevada, leveraged that to a better head coaching job at Colorado State.

Man, he's been everywhere and done everything. And has always loved Iowa. What's not to like?

I'm sure he loves to grind and to teach. Kirk is super familiar with him, and wouldn't hire him if he wasn't still getting after it every day. Norvell strikes me as a guy who will be volunteer coaching with Kirk at some high school when they are in "retirement."

Jay Niemann had been everywhere, too, including as a head coach at Simpson. That hire has worked out great. I like the mix of ages and life stages on the staff. I think Kirk figured out a long time ago that relating to players doesn't have anything to do with age. Assemble guys who like to build relationships and teach the sport...pretty good starting point for a program, especially when you are selling stability in the NIL era.
+1

Good post.

Good stuff!

He's the youngest-looking 62 year old I've ever seen. Probably going to make a good DC when LeVar comes home.

With Kirk only coaching another season or two, its good to load up with experienced football coaches When we get his replacement there will be mass changes some good some bad. nice to have legacy guys on board now to filter through.

I can’t really add anything to this thread. It feels like Kirk’s final go “all in” season will be 2027. I don’t think it matters a ton if Jay Norvell can match what Ladell Betts did in terms of recruiting.
