Nolan Groves

The portals officially open Monday and it likely will get wild and crazy. Let's hope the Hawks successfully fill some of their needs.

I saw a post on X the last couple days that may have some legs.

Nolan Groves, who I'd never heard of, is entering the portal. He just finished his freshman year at Texas Tech and appears to have had a good year. What's interesting is that two years ago he was the Minnesota Player of the Year. Iowa assistant Barnwell would have been an assistant at Texas Tech when he was being recruited so they could know each other well.

Groves is a 6'5" shooting guard. So, if he can handle the ball at all he could be a fit at guard, maybe that PG by committee that I have suggested using our wings.

The post I saw suggested the Gophers should be after him so there is that.

Just throwing it out there.

Interesting. McCollum's original plan which he has laid out publicly was to find a 1-year stop-gap star at PG to replace Stirtz, then bring in an elite PG in the recruiting class of 2027 whom he can have for 4 years. He feels he's 'in' on a couple top shelf PGs in the class of '27.

A guy like Groves can split PG/SG with Combs ('26-27 Senior). If they bring in a PG in '27, Combs will have graduated, and a highly regarded freshman PG can step in.

With Barnwell having been an assistant under Texas Tech HC Grant McCasland for two years, maybe there is a chance that McCasland has steered Groves towards Iowa. (McCollum & McCasland are also said to be good friends off the court.)
