Noah Shannon part of gambling investigation....

They've rewritten the penalties for some of the minor infractions and they're much less serious. I doubt he misses very many games, if he does. And at least if we had to lose someone it is coming from an area of strength, the D-Line.

This.

Dochterman talked about it in a recent pod. Going to be a slap in the wrist.

Also add in the fact Kirk is the last coach who’d send a player to media days if they had baggage, issues, etc. The fact Kirk chose Noah tells me it’s nothing serious.

As long as they are not betting on their own sport, who gives a shit. They are adults. Iowa made gambling legal, why can't they put some money down on the Chiefs game? To each their own.

In any event, slap the wrist and let's get the season going. Noah gonna have a monster year.

Got a feeling if they really made a Federal effort to investigate online gambling we’d be watching Walk-ons starting half of college football games. If it’s legal and not on your sport who cares.

I think the problem lies in that if a players gets into debt to gamblers/bookies/institutions, they can be susceptible to throwing games in the future.

Because maybe a guy like Ben Niemann tells his buddies still at Iowa that Mahomes can't even walk at practice that week. Or maybe he tells his dad, who mentions it at lunch, and a bunch of assistants and current players jump in.

Or Connor tells his buddies he was up all night because Caitlin was puking and Bluder told her she was going to sit her out for the game tomorrow.

I'm not usually one for slippery slope arguments but with gambling I think it 100% applies. Especially with all the money in sports these days.

So the question for Kirk will be did he know Shannon was on the list prior to choosing him for going? Seems odd to have done that if he did.... So the players all know who they are obviously but they aren't coming forward and telling coaches or how the hell is this working? Are coaches going to be in the dark going into week 1 on who's all eligible to play and who's not? It's just odd and the murky vagueness of it all needs to get cleared up.

Kirk knows who the players are and probably to what extent they'll be punished under the new ncaa wagering punishment scale. My guess is that Noah will only have to take the 'prevention education' and therefore the public would only have known what was released by the school, as it relates to his involvment.

As far as I've known the names are all hush hush. KF knowing who's on it is news to me. I think he should know so he can plan ahead accordingly. Hopefully he'll have a better idea how long guys will be out then Heller did. What Heller had to put up with was horseshit.

I am not talking about bookies. If they are doing that, that is illegal and can be investigated and punished accordingly. Just because weed is legal in your state, if you buy weed from your local weed dealer out of his apartment that is a crime. Same with gambling. It is regulated now and you still have to follow the rules.

My understanding is that these kids are getting into trouble for doing online sports gambling like Draft Kings. If that is the case, those places don't send Mugsy down to your apartment to collect with a baseball bat. You bet with a credit card and only gamble what you have.

If it is more than online, legal betting, than I might feel differently. That is not my understanding.

If Nieman does that, it is a federal crime. Ask Martha Stuart how disclosing and accepting insider trading information can work out for you.

I agree that gambling can present side crimes and I personally think gambling is mostly a dumb, regressive tax on a lot of folks without the disposable income to lose. But, I think smoking is dumb too. Adults get to make choices as to how they want to F up their lives in this country (within reason).

One can also get drunk and drive a car and kill someone. Should we ban drinking because of that?

Slippery slope is not a reason to ban kids from engaging in legal behavior. I draw the line at betting on their own sport, of course. Beyond that, if they engage in illegal betting conduct, punish them. If not, they are free to bet legally and that should not be the business of the NCAA.

Insider trading in a security is specifically banned by two sections of the 1934 Exchange Act. Given the immense breadth of our federal statutes, I presume that an overzealous AUSA could come up with a wire fraud or unauthorized access to a system argument to attach federal criminal liability, but there is no federal statute akin to Section 10(b) of the Exchange Act that expressly is gonna land you in the federal pen for gambling with inside information. There is an entire industry that purportedly provides inside information specifically for degenerate gamblers.

Pete was betting on baseball. The nuance that he was betting for his team changes nothing. He crossed the brightest goddam line in all of sports. Baseball players can't bet on baseball. Period.

I absolutely disagree. A performance incentive is by itself a bet on your own team and every manager and coach has one of those. Kirk has all sorts of performance incentives. He gets bonuses for various wins, bowl games, division title, conference title, natty, etc. If anything, Pete simply created his own incentive plan except his actually had downside if he failed, so he had even more incentive to win.
