Fry has a good point. The real tourney is still 64. The play in has expanded to 24 teams that will play a game to narrow it to 12 and those 12 get added to the top 52 teams that have a "bye" to form the traditional 64 teams for opening weekend. The 24 teams that are in the playin are the least relevant teams and will be all the high seeds for the tourney. So, yes, it is adding some folks to the dance floor, but not really changing the dance all that much. Easy way to raise revenue, help marginal coaches keep their jobs, and maybe add a little more juice to the Tuesday/Wednesday between conference tourney and the start of March Madness. Upon reflection, I have no beef with this.
