From Candy-O

Tough to beat their eponymous first album but Candy-O comes close.

Easton is criminally under-rated.
I've always said Candy-O IS better than the first album in large part because of Easton and Benjamin Orr. This song shows their homage to Roxy Music. They were also influenced by Bowie, Velvet Underground, Iggy Pop and Tommy James and the Shondells.

Welcome back sir. I continue to enjoy your posts.

What made Candy-O special in my book is that despite a). following a smash album, and b). being released almost a year to the day of their inaugural album...it didn't present as rushed.

A bit of my old memory sprinkled in with some research finds the music world peppered with poor album follow-ups post smash-releases... (and yes, I have owned most of these...)

Tusk
I'm in You
Sandinista!
Four Wheel Drive
Goats Head Soup
A day at the Races
Most anything after Back in Black

The first album is great and it's all subjective, but I would place both Candy-O and "shake it up" ahead of it. The Cars was really hitting its groove with those releases.

Also, I don't get why Panorama often gets a "Meh." IMO, it's pretty solid throughout.

As far as influencers, Captain Beefheart and Buddy Holly were major as well.

Ocasek could write catchy hooky rock and roll songs in his sleep. With the exception of Night Spots none of the Candy-O material was left over from the sessions that created the debut. And even that song was heavily rearranged from its original version. You have to go their double CD "Just What I Needed" anthology to find the original. It wasn't until their last album (with Ben) Door To Door that they started going into the vaults for old songs not yet recorded.

Panorama and Shake it Up are loaded with rocking deep tracks. The Panorama title track may be as hard as they ever rocked and Gimme Some Slack is awesome.

The old early 80's late night show Friday's featured at least two Cars appearances and the version of Think It Over from the show blows the album version away. They're easy to find on YouTube

This dual lead-in-song combo joins the ranks of all time greats.

To include:
Threshold/Jet Air Liner
Feeling that way/Anytime
Eruption/You Really Got Me
Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In
We will rock you/We are the champions
Waiting for the Bus/Jesus Just Left Chicago

I neglected to mention "Heartbeat City," which I also would place above their debut. Just a solid album throughout. I own an audiophile quality pressing and it's a very satisfying listen.

Interesting take.

I personally am still going to rate their #1 as #1. It was a new sound; refreshing, clean, uncomplicated, raw.
Aka The Beatles 64-65.

The cover was simplistically zesty.
It got people immediately dancing.

And, it's highest single, Just What I Needed, only reached #27. It wasn't a top 10 album, peaking at #18.
But it stuck on the charts for #139 weeks.
It defined the 80s, years before.

They started to morph to more intricate offerings with Candy-O and were full-blown mutated by 1981.
Aka 67's Sgt. Peppers.

#1...less was more IMO. A masterpiece.

That's where they started to lose me. It was overproduced. Hello Again and the title track were the highlights for me.

I like Tommy Bolin's Hello Again much better. Different song:)

Ric was a huge fan of Suicide (and as I recently found out so was Springsteen)

Shoo-be-doo was his nod to Suicide's "Frankie Teardrop"

Enjoy Cars fans.
I graduated high school in 1983 so I saw their career unfold in real time. My friends and the jocks did not care for them that much at the time except for their debut album..

Now all these years later many of those same people, have changed their tune. And younger people who weren't even born when Benjamin Orr was alive are definitely discovering them.

I was there all along. And while I like AC/DC and Van Halen too, I may have liked the Cars better.
