minutes this coming season

With Trey now on board it's got me thinking there is going to be some serious competition for minutes this coming year.

I'm guessing that competition has already started.

Too bad Trey and Alvaro aren't in IC right now. They'll just have to catch up.

Anybody heard how Alvaro and Spain are doing in his tourney?

Assuming everyone is healthy, I would guess starters are:

Stirtz, Hausen, Folg., Koch, and Thompson

McCollum usually has a short bench if history holds. I would think that Banks and Manyawu will be in the mix. The back up guard positions seem pretty open.

Interesting... My initial guess is gonna be the Drake kids get the leg up. I'm guessing that Jirak won't play a heck of a lot unless we play a bigger team. I think Koch and Thompson are gonna battle for being that first forward off the bench and the other won't play much.

I will leave room for being wrong in that if Thompson is all that and a bag of chips he could leap frog into a starting spot. I could see him not being a starter day 1 and working is way into it. If he's that good then put him out there.

Stirtz - Combs
Hausen- Howard
Folg - Koch
Banks -Thompson
Manyawu- Jirak

Before his injury, there was a lot of buzz that Koch had a real shot at playing his way into the starting line-up last season. If he is healthy, he will get minutes. Thompson did not reclassify and turn down KU to come to Iowa and sit on the bench. I am confident promises were made. He may not start immediately, but I bet he ends as a starter. Iowa doesn't get Top 75 recruits very often. Stirtz, Hausen, and Folg seem like locks to start. The other two spots might be fluid. It would not surprise me if McCollum has a bit deeper bench given the talent that is available. He could easily go 9 deep without a ton of drop off.

My guess is that at least 3 starters will average above 30 minutes a game, with Bennet playing close to 36 per. My guess is that early in the season, we see a rotation of close to 10, but when we start playing the tougher teams, that will be holding down to about 8, at the most 9 depending on foul situations.

I really like that there's 10 guys that should be playable. I agree with you on the how the mins might be spread out so there's gonna be a couple guys at least that probably won't be real happy most of the yr. That sucks but is what it is. Winning will help alleviate that feeling but as we know college hoops is so yr to yr now. There's probably gonna be multiple guys leaving next yr and that'll just be an is what it is thing.

Stirtz will be he the anchor of this team, no doubt of that IMO. I like 6'4: PGs with NBA potentail! He played a ot of minutes at Drake and I'd expect that to continue.

An interesting aspect of him being the anchor is who will the staff start grooming as the heir apparent at PG? Not much is said about Payton McCollum other than how hard he works. When this all started, I thought they might try and put Isaia Howard there.

I'm not sure why Sage is being sold short? By everything I read, he should be right there in competing for playing time.

I don't know this staff well enough yet to know if they would promise TT anything other than the opportunity to compete. What if he comes in and isn't ready? I did like his post where he said that a key factor was how nice everyone was, even the photographer who took the pictures! Iowa Nice rules...........

Promises might be a strong word, but you get the gist. KF lured in some talented DBs and OLs his first recruiting cycle by stating the obvious---playing time was available early given the status of the program.

Again, Thompson spurned the likes of KU and he decided to go to college a year earlier at Iowa. He is fully expecting to be on the court for significant minutes, and the coaches conveyed they shared that expectation. But, everyone earns their minutes as the season progresses. This kid seems legit, both athletically and as a person so far.

Seems like a crime if he doesn't log in significant minutes

Preconference I would image the starting 5 will play about 30 minutes together

Hopefully the second five will blend in with the starters by then

Haven't been this excited about Hawkeye Basketball for a while

It'll be one of the top of the list things being paid attention to. If he's starting day 1 that would say a lot about how good he must be. Cause with the depth they seem to have I don't think that it's a given that he will. And as I'd mentioned earlier I'm just not sure how many mins the backup forwards are gonna get with Ben. I just hope that if he doesn't start and doesn't play a ton early on that it doesn't discourage him into hopping in portal right away. Cause he's gonna be a great player and it'd sure be nice if he would be for Iowa.

Rarely does a kid with this pedigree fall flat. Sometimes a highly touted Big comes in and cannot adjust to the speed of the game right away or ever. Hell, Garza struggled a lot his freshmen year. But, with kids like this who already have a solid frame, and can score both inside and out, he should hit the ground running. Hopefully he gets on campus and starts to blend into the squad right away.

Still trying to wrap my head around the fact that Iowa snagged a player who was wanted by these top tier programs. I think you could argue without question that UConn, Alabama, Tennessee and Purdue are top 10 programs right now....and maybe even TOP 5 (!) programs. Maybe Kansas has slipped, but they still have a ton of cash and prestige. Basically all the top programs other than Duke, Florida and Auburn offered him.

Can you remember another example like this in the Tom Davis and later era (where most of the blue bloods offered and the kid picked Iowa)? I know Kenyon Murray was somewhat in that ballpark...and Pierre Pierce to a degree. (Didn't Duke offer him?).

Off the top of my head, that's about all I can come up with over the past 35 years or so. And I'm not talking number of stars or this or that rank...just purely about offers from a comprehensive list of blue bloods.

Of late, Koch was a Top 75 kids and had offers from Illinois, Wisky, and Purdue among others. A legacy kid though, so not exactly a good comparison.

At the beginning of the Fran era, Woodbury was highly sought after. He had a Kansas offer when Kansas was Kansas. But, Iowa had a built in advantage because Woody was a Hawk fan.

Tyler Cook was a huge get and probably the best comparator to TT. Top 50 kid. He had offers from Missouri, Arkansas, and Florida, and Kansas was sniffing around him as well before he committed. He was probably Fran's biggest recruiting coup.

Funny enough I may have a recent example... Remember the name TJ Power? He was like a top 25 kid coming out 4/5 star. Fran was in on him for awhile and then his recruitment blew up so he went to Duke. Well needless to say he didn't cut it there after a yr and went to VA (Fran tried to get him to transfer to us but again no luck) He didn't do anything at VA and then when Bennett retired he hopped in portal again and now he's with Fran at Penn...

Or who was that in-state center who was like a high 4-star kid, that picked ISU over Iowa and then hardly ever played. About 5 years ago? I think he had a girlfriend at ISU or something?

Yup Foster he had his hair a wild blonde color. We dodged a bullet by missing out on him. That reminds me of Omaha Bieliew that Waukee kid that was the Sandforts teammate in HS that went to ISU for awhile but sucked and left to Wake Forest I think. He's done next to nothing so far

Yikes even worse then I thought. I knew he didn't do shit but geez. I consider myself a fairly big hoops fan. I've followed it a long time. But I can't say I've ever heard of Radford before. That's a new one on me.

Back to that Omaha kid. He was a really high 5 star kid. The ISU folks were puffing their chests out pretty hard when they landed him. ISU landed 2 high level local Iowa kids and they couldn't develop em into doing anything.

The MELTDOWN here and other places when he snubbed Iowa was epic.

Further proof that star ratings are totally bogus once you get past the best 4-5 kids in a cycle. They're done by part time "reporters" who don't know squat about coaching or scouting and get paid a few cents per click. The bios of the rivals and 24/7 staff are so comical it's almost like they're fake.
