Miller: Hawks Shock Purdue; Long Lasting Benefits?

LOL. My wife told me today as I left the beach to watch the game 'You are the only person I know that has to actually work AT being on vacation'.

BUT, she knows I love my job and career and that most of it isn't work for me. Nights like tonight, I can write all night and get irritated when I have to sleep

Great article, game I will never forget. The end of this season, even with a loss today is only the beginning of good things for Iowa. With Cezar in the house and Cole's last game, fitting Cole was the factor today and Cezar was into the game...hopefully, a passing of the torch.

Very good read Jon.

I totally agree that this win can serve as a very positive springboard to much better days ahead for the BB program.

If the Hawks can manage to win a game in the Big 10 tourney and then get Cezar and a quality big man to sign on for next year's recruiting class - things will be very entertaining to watch next year!

It is great to see some fan enthusiasm returning to Carver Hawkeye again. Recruiting some difference maker athletes and getting some more quality wins like today will really get the state pumped about Hawkeye basketball again. I know I have paid more attention to Hawkeye basketball in the last month than I had in the previous 3 years, and I am really excited about the future with Fran at the helm.

Keep it rolling Hawks and hopefully Cezar will commit in the very near future!!!

I agree. Years down the road I think we'll look back at this game as a pivotal point in rebuilding the program. It was an impressive win that happened despite many obstacles, and at exactly the right time. Even though this game had nothing to do with whether we got to a post-season tournament or seeds (well, at least ours), it was huge nevertheless. I'm sure Cezar noticed; other recruits did, too.

As much as I loved this victory, I also loved seeing Mel and some of the other players smack in the middle of the rush of students on the floor SMILING. What a change from the past three years.

Fran's working his magic.

Good read,John. No doubt, Carver was a magical place yesterday. When the House is rocking like it was yesterday, thruout the game, the memories flood back of just how tought a venue it can be,when the Hawks are rolling. King Kong aint got nuthin on the Hawks when Carver is that loud!!

As has been said here, it was a perfect exclamation point on a tough season that had signs of hope. Youth is wasted on the young, they say, but for us old fans, the youth of this team is what will keep us fired up thruout the rubber chicken circut this summer. As Hlas said, Fran can go out to the I-Club outings this summer with a spring in his step and some good stories to tell....and us members will be lapping it up.
I am a big Chicago Bulls fan,and Fran reminds me somewhat of their new coach,Tom Thibideau. He is a bb lifer,a coach's coach, who simply oozes bb intellect. When he is asked a question, like Fran, he assumes a level of sophistication and gives a direct but sophisticated technical bb answer. These guys live and breath the game, and they are good communicators.

When Fran was hired, he immediately lost Aaron Fuller, Cody Larson, and Ben Brust.
He simply went out and grabbed:
- a juco point guard who has ended up leading the Big Ten in assists.
- a frosh big man who will be on the All-Frosh team and averaged 13 and 8 in the league

That is a helluva response to losing those players,in my book.
Was this an important day for Iowa bb? Only time will tell, but it sure will help sustain the enthusiasm and excitement for Iowa bb thru the spring, summer and fall.
And it should sure help motivate the players thru the all important spring, summer and fall workouts as they work to get more cake after a sweet bite yesterday.

Now, go out and play well in the BTT...win or lose, grab up a couple more top recruits...leaving only one question in this Hawk bb fan's mind...when does Prime Time League tip off? Go Hawks!!!

I was at the game yesterday, and the atmosphere was electric! The crowd definitely was a factor in the game. I had a couple of Purdon't folks in front of me, and they didn't know how to react to how their guys were getting outhustled by the Hawks. Fran is definitely the right guy to get the Iowa BB program back to its former glory. This win will be a catalyst for the resurgence of Hawkeye BB. Jarryd Cole was such a pleasure to watch, and it was great to be able to see him go out on a good note, after all he's endured. And to all the haters, look who stepped up and contributed yesterday, Archie, May, Brommer, and McCabe all made big contributions to this W. This is a young team, and will only get better under Fran & Co. I was at the Michigan game too, and could see then that we are only a couple of guys away from really competing consistently in the BT. No group deserved to experience a win like yesterdays more than these players. I for one will miss Jarryd Cole's leadership and character. He is a true Hawkeye who will be remembered for years to come for his contribution to the program, and for staying when others bailed. He will be successful in any endeavor of life he pursues. Thanks Jarryd!

Great read! Gotta love these end of season wins to take my mind of the previous 6 losses and blowouts. Same thing with football season.. lost 4 in a row, but after stomping Mizzou, it made the season a success in my eyes!

You're not fooling anyone and yet, still here you are...

Was at the game and certainly felt good to feel good again about Iowa BB.

Now, I'm *not* being a negative nelly, but, Purdue did go cold for about a 6-7 minute stretch in the 2nd half...(we didn't play remarkable D or anything, they just missed)....then again, so did Iowa, yet we managed to gut it out...so yes....kudo's to Iowa for that.

We came close a few times this year (OT w Bucky, OSU, @ NW), so perhaps, we've turned the corner.

Am I convinced....ummm....not yet. Too many NW @ Home type of games this year, so, we'll see what Iowa team/program shows up in the BTT.

Go Hawks

I have seen nearly every Hawk BB game played in CHA in person. This game ranks among the top ten games I have seen. Just fantastic.

While I appreciate the skepticism, I really have a hard time understanding how/why many fans can't see the difference Fran has brought to the program.

Like many, I wondered if, a la Lick, he wasn't just a small-school/mid-major wunderkind who wasn't up to Big Ten or big-time college basketball. Would the Hawks REALLY be able to adopt a running-style approach at this point? Would the loss of two recruits plus the best player off the 2009-2010 team sink this program enough to keep us in single digits? And frankly, can a Big Ten team that loses to South Dakota State by ten points even BE on the same court as OSU, Purdue or Wiscy and not absolutely embarrass itself? And Cully Payne is out...and who the he&& is Bryce Cartwright?

Funny things happened this year. My brother and I actually CARED about b-ball games. I actually DVRed games! And frankly, this team is a few breaks and bounces from going .500 this year.

It's obvious we still have match-up problems against some teams/styles. But Bryce Cartwright is for real. Jarryd Cole showed more heart and character than "See-gar" in "Officer and a Gentleman". And Melsahn Basabe's put-back slam of Cole's missed jumper pretty much explains why Siena fans came on here last spring BEGGING Fran not to bring Basabe with him to IOWA. BTW, to Siena admins/AD/etc....THANK YOU! We owe you BIG-TIME!

We aren't "back" yet. But we are a LOT closer than I ever thought we would be at this stage of the Fran Era.

The Purdue victory apparently did not have a long-lasting impact on Senor Guerrero.

And that is okay, Iowa got in on him later than most, but the fact that he set foot on campus and had Iowa in his final three is a message of how quickly the current staff can act. Do I wish Cezar would have been a Hawk yes, but not the end of the world.
Look they secured a 2012 visit in a short amount of time, Iowa's staff is going to outwork a lot of staffs and in the end, it will show.

BTW to anyone: Who was the last non-Iowan player that committed to Iowa as a Junior?
