Michigan lucked out

It sounds like the refs actually got it right. The B1G office circulated a video with the official clock, and even the MAC commissioner was satisfied. I felt bad for WMU, but, giving credit where credit is due, Michigan pulled it off so tip of the hat.

The scoreboard clock is unofficial.the field judge or back judge keep the official time down to hundredths of a second. Technically there could have been a few hundredths of a second officially remaining.

What you see, perhaps immediately, are scoreboards in NCAA and NFL stadiums converting to tenth of a second increments. Like they did in basketball fifteen, twenty years ago.

In last night's case, like I said, when the scoreboard clock hit triple zero there could still have been a fraction of a second officially left. And Michigan deserves credit for executing the play

Not saying the officials got it right or wrong, but my question is: if it had been the other way around with WMU trying the Hail Mary would there still have been a second left or would the game have ended on the first attempt? We’ll never know, but in my opinion the game would have been over.

why isn't anyone acknowledging the fact that a game can't end on a defensive penalty. The defender illegally touched the ball. he had stepped out of bounds then touched the ball.

I'll admit I've never heard this called down in the end zone but that is the rule.

Very good question. I’m not sure same results

The MAC just formally protested the win and is asking the WM be awarded the game. They actually have a decent argument that the replay officials did not follow the correct protocol.

No way it'll go anywhere unfortunately. Too many people who don't want to admit they were wrong would have to admit they were wrong.

The only one who screwed up here, if there was a screw up, is the Big10 replay officiating crew. The MAC is not asking them to admit they were wrong. They are asking the NCAA oversight committee to overturn the results. From what I read, there isn't a formal protest system in football as there is in baseball, but there also isn't anything saying that it can't be overturned. If it can be proven that the crew reviewed the play incorrectly AND time actually did run out, they should change it. The game was over.

I agree its not likely to be overturned officially.

However, I just read they also sent a letter to the CFP Committee asking them to declare that for purposes of the playoffs WM won. Now, I don't expect the CFPC to take that bait, but you damn well that if Michigan ends up 10-2, or it WM ends up 11-1, they are going to absolutely discuss how legitimate those records are.

Yah, I mean....we've seen Michigan get away with things that they did with premeditation and malice of forethought and had zero repercussions.

It's not like they could have even planned this.

Michigan did not do this. This is not Harbaugh cheating. This is the conference reffing system.

Let's also keep the grand conspiracy shit in check. Yes, these were conference replay refs, but its not like they handed Michigan the game on a platter. The replay refs gave them one more play for a 50 yard Hail Mary. The odds of that play working were still less than 10%.

I am not tin foil hat on this one. I just think Michigan lost and reality should reflect that.

I saw an interesting suggestion from someone on twitter last night that they should do away with the decimal on football clocks because it relys on someone watching a ref wave his hand and hitting the button "arbitrarily" anyway. I thought it was a totally stupid argument at first, but then I also thought...getting rid of the decimal would decrease the error factor in slow mo by a factor of ten.

In other words, you could only argue that it was say, 3 seconds or 4 seconds...not whether it was 3.0, 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, 3.4, and so on. If something happens 0.2 seconds before the clock ticks to the next second, you're not arguing that anymore.

We already know the answer to that.

Interesting take, but no flag was ever thrown and I'm honestly not sure that they can/could use replay for to make such a call.

This is the right answer. And I think the fact that the NCAA response that football playing rules don't allow it to overturn the outcome of a game says just that. The problem is they overturn the outcome of games all the time with forfeited wins due to ineligible players, scandals, etc... all the time. To even have an appeal process yet nothing no mechanism to overturn the outcome of an event is ridiculous. The NCAA (not to mention the Big Ten) look are the laughingstock of college football. The only positive spin to come out of this is Michigan (w/ LSU hot on their heals) is currently the most hated program in the sport, and I honestly love it.
