Michigan Game Is Not Sold Out

That PSU game really hurt things. Big time. If they beat Penn State CHA would be rowdy as hell and it appears the fair weather contingent is starting to check out.

BMC has said after every game and before the season how important a full house is and IMO that's really the only long shot we have at this matchup. Even if it takes it from a 2% chance to a 5% chance.

And I'll again go on record as saying we need big bodies. Iowa shot like shit the other day but only lost by 2 points against a really, really bad team. If you look at the rebounds it was 24 a piece.

But...PSU had exactly 2 offensive rebounds...TWO.

Iowa got outrebounded 22 to 14 on the defensive side. Against a terrible team. Iowa won the FT%, assist, and TO margins by a long ways. But they couldn't rebound the ball on defense and create possessions which is more important than any of that. It's a story that keeps on repeating itself. Iowa needs size down low, period.

The PSU game hurt for sure, but I don't think we can underestimate how much oxygen the WBB is taking up. They are sold out and there are only so many free nights in the week for basketball fans to head to Carver.

I was kinda wondering about that too. How many Iowa fans were waiting to see when the women were playing this week before they bought tickets. Or for that matter, how many will be on their way to Indy for the women's game on Friday.

Well, and even beyond any direct conflicts, folks only have so much money and so many free nights. There are not many MBB programs in the country, if any, who WBB is a bigger draw than the men. Its a great problem to have if you are the AD, as selling out women's games is rare in most places. Plus, Carver holds 15k+, so its not a small barn. Trying to fill that arena multiple times a week is a lot to ask of one relatively small and rural fan base.

Point taken but I do think if we score 3 more points in that PSU game that CHA is sold out Thursday.

I nerd out a bit on this shit due to my background in market research, but I'd love to know how much Beth has looked into this and what the results are.

How much overlap is there in fans/consumers across the two teams? I suspect a fair amount, but don't really know. I think there is also a mutually exclusive group for each team.

The women's product is more compelling right now, and at a better price. It's fun to see your team win.

On social media, I notice some of my peers who grew up in IC in the Davis era and still live in Eastern Iowa posting pics when they go to games. I'd say very ballpark that most go to a couple games a year, which generally described me and a lot of the middle class kids I grew up with back in the 80s and early 90s.

The thing is, back then, almost all of us went to men's games those couple times a year. Now, when I see pics, most my peer group is taking their kids to women's games.

I think the issue is more the casual fan. I live in Omaha, and try to catch a game in either Carver or in Lincoln every year. In years past, it would always be a men's game. But, since CC, either game is acceptable, and frankly, the women's game is a bit more energetic because it is sold out. There are some die hard women's sports and WBB fans that go to most Iowa WBB games, and there is the dude who stands up and claps at every men's game. Those fans are ardent.

But, what I think the women's team has done is two-fold. First, they created totally new BB fans. People who did not go to either, but wanted to see what this CC thing was all about and now they are still going. And second, they have siphoned off causal fans from MBB. McCollum will bring fans back to the men's games. Unlike Fran, he engages with the crowd and gives a shit that they are there. People feel that. Attendance will go up. Ben will create new fans with his success and attitude. But, the question is can Iowa maintain two highly attended basketball programs at the same time??? Will be tough,.

We use to get it done with tough 6'9" guys like Reggie Evans and Greg Brunner (two of all time favorites) I know the league wasn't fat with 7 footers then but man those guys could rebound !!

Speaking for myself the PSU brought a bitter taste of here we go again that has followed this program for decades now. Seems like they turn a corner but by season end the same lifeless effort and dumb mistakes.

We limp into the tournament if we make it and get wrecked and that’s that.

If you don't see any difference between this team and Fran's squads, you are not watching the same games I am. They may not get far in McCollum's first season at the helm, but the fact that Iowa is .500 in conference and locked to make the Tourney with a complete roster flip is a testament to BM's coaching ability. Things will ascend from here. Iowa MBB is already playing with house money IMHO.

Around 2500 tickets left as of last night.
That's not very many really... relatively speaking. It'd be awesome to have a sell out. I'm guessing some folks that aren't going that normally might kinda think Michigan is just gonna boat race us and they have something they'd rather be doing then watch that. I don't see us matching up with them one little bit. This is a David vs Goliath type of game if their ever was one.
