McCaffery addresses what he wants to do with the last two scholarships and our need for a big man

Q. Is it imperative to get a post guy?
COACH McCAFFERY: No. I would like to. We need one. But if I had a chance to get a 6'3" guy, or a 6'5" guy that was better than the 6'9" guy I could get, I would take the better player pretty much no matter what.

The previous question he says he's looking for "shooting and athleticism"

My bet is on Cezar/Phillip Miller and Hubbard. One of those two and Anthony will round out this class and give us some much needed athleticism and shooting. Im waiting for some good news

Seems like his strategy for rounding out this year's class has moved from the best guard and the best big, to the two best players.

Judging by Andrew Francis' twitter feed, Iowa is still looking at Eli Carter.

So I think Miller is a fallback to Eli Carter.

Cez/Carter would be my hope. Miller's story just sounds weird, and I know I am in the minority, but I'd prefer Iowa passes on Hubbard.

Miller takes his exam sometime in March and probably won't know until late march early april if he's qualified. Will that be too late to commit?

I feel like once we got one commit the other will happen right away

Hawkstrat Guerrero/Carter would be a great combination to have for four years. Hopefully Carter will come for a visit sooner than later

The way I see it, which is more of a guess, is that CG and Carter are similar offers being they are both true points. So McC would take both but I think its more likely one will come here and one won't. This leaves Miller and Hubbard. I think Miller lacks an offer because he has not qualified yet. Late march is not to late to accept. Signing starts like April 13 or 14 its a Wednesday. I also think these 2 are similar because Miller runs the point now, but with his speed and ability to score he could be a deadly SG down the road. I'd take him over Hubbard IMO because he has 4 years to play here to Hubbards 2, although he's developed since he's 25.

The best way for Iowa to get better is to get the best players available, no matter the position.
Does Iowa need a big guy, yeah, but first and foremost, Iowa simply needs better players.
If Iowa stockpiles on guards, so be it, then mismatches can be created and Iowa can impose its will upon teams. The uptempo game and pressing all over the floor. Iowa has enough big guys to get by.
Basabe is a player that will just get better and the other bigs need to compliment him by being able to play defense, rebound and score when they get the opportunity.
White, McCabe, Marble, Oglesby need to be able to contribute enough to open up the paint for Basabe, multiple players that can knock down a 15 ft. jump shot will go a long way.
If Iowa were to land two guards that are similar, so be it, they can be key players that could either start or come off the bench and allow Iowa to press and trap all over the place. Cezar and Carter are the ideal fits for what Fran wants to accomplish, both are the exact kind of players Iowa needs to move forward.
Fran and Staff can find talent, they have proven that with Basabe/Cartwright. The game is guard dominated now and teams can get by with serviceable Centers. The 1-3 positions are the most important in the game now and if a team can find or develop quality big guys, it is a bonus.

Good points but Carter is actually a combo guard and plays SG on his prep team (Kansas commit Naadir Tharpe plays PG)

This is why it seems to be more plausible to get both Cezar/Carter. Cezar is a true PG and Carter can play both, Iowa could become a very good team overnight with those two and White/Oglesby. 4 positions of the team would be set with this one class alone for the future and keep in mind Basabe would only be a sophomore and play three years with this group...the prospects of Iowa's future would look great. With that type of a recruiting class coming in next year, the NCAA tournament and a top half Big Ten finish become very real.

I'm with you, while I believe in second chances for Hubbard I'd rather Iowa pass. I would be happy with Guerrero/Carter.

Agreed, similar to some of the better Villanova teams(no I'm not saying Iowa will be that good) who had 4 guards and a 4 or 5.

Lets being positive and say Iowa lands Cezar, and Carter you might as well add Payne to the class. So it would be Cezar, Payne, Carter, Josh, and White. I mean mercy that makes this team A TON better.

Cully redshirting makes him a Sophomore still, so he would be in the class with Marble, McCabe, Basabe.

Yes, I know what you are saying and I like it. Here is the thing, I am not going to say that Iowa shouldn't try and get any big guys, but if they can get two quality guards that give them depth and scoring options to insert either in the starting lineup or off the bench, then Iowa is better for it. I just do not think that the Center position is as important as some. For the 2012 class, Iowa must get at least two bigs if they don't get any this year. Now, that bodes well because Woodbury is supposed to be Iowa's to lose (I hate that statement, it is unfair and makes the coach look bad if it happens with no control). Thok could be a guy that comes in and really surprises, he looks to be more athletic than originally thought. Then there is the Meyer kid out of Georgia, but Iowa also has some offers out to some guys that have the similar body type of Basabe. Basabe is going to be there next year and if he is the primary guy and stays out of foul trouble, he will play 30+ minutes and that eliminates having to have another guy or two behind him.
Think about these two recruiting classes 2010: Cartwright, Basabe, Marble, McCabe
2011: Oglesby, White and potentially Cezar, Carter, or a combination of things.
If Iowa only gets Cezar or Carter and someone else, when was the last time Iowa was able to put together back to back recruiting classes like this? Oglesby is a Top 150 player, White is a player that is better than he was originally given credit and as he matures is going to be a mismatch at whatever position he grown into, so two good players with the potential to add one or possibly two great players.

Lets not forget that Brommer and Archie are coming back so it's not like we just flat out suck at the 5. With another year under Fran I think both of those guys could be HUGE surprises next year. Let's be honest, nobody thought either one of them was going to contribute anything to this years team and each looked great at times and **** poor seconds later.

We need Cezar and a wing that can score. This will allow Gatens to spot up, May to have fresh legs and play 10 minutes, Marble to get some experience and depth at the PG so Cartwright doesn't have to play the entire game.

I also think that brings some serious cred to the team and the 7 footers from the West will be more inclined to sign.

"Lets not forget that Brommer and Archie are coming back so it's not like we just flat out suck at the 5."

What? According to another poster on a different message board far far away, here are Brommer's numbers from the last six games.

13.5 Mins Per Game
1.8 Points Per Game
2.5 Rebounds Per Game
3.0 Fouls Per Game

Going into the season with just Brommer and Archie does mean Iowa flat out sucks at the 5.
