May leaving Michigan

May after only two seasons is leaving Michigan and going to the NBA (Dallas Mavericks). Cited "fatigue" from the NIL mess.

Will Michigan pursue our coach Ben?
 
Yes, Ben is in no hurry to leave.

The only I would worry about is if the Kansas job opened up 5 years from now.
 
Sounds like one of his assistants will take over in the short term so no drawn out search for now.

I wouldn't expect a mass exodus of players to leave Michigan with the timing being what it is. Not many open spots out there for big $ NIL guys to go to I wouldn't think. But hey I could be surprised. With how there's nonstop tampering going on anyway who knows.

If you're going to lose your NCAA championship winning coach late June is pretty much when you'd want to so long as you have an assistant to hand the reigns to that's not going to totally upset the apple cart. Michigan is lucky atm I'd say. Usually losing a coach like that should gut a team in the short term but I don't think it will in this case.

That Kansas job may not be as shiny in 5 years. Now that everyone is paying players, Self and his high end bag man don't look nearly as formidable. Trophies get dusty much quicker these days. Historic venues become old arenas. Lawrence Kansas is a meh college town. Etc. 25 years ago the Nebraska football job would have been one of the premier jobs in the country. Times change. In 5 years Iowa might be a better job than Kansas in MBB.
 
I have faith in Ben sticking around for a while

This is most likely his dream job

He certainly has the recruiting skills and most certainly how to coach a winning team

Plus he knows how to recruit quality talent recognize his abilities

He is high in the hierarchy of Hawkeye basketball coaches

There's been more turnover at scUM than a dollar whore.

May just won the NC, has a loaded roster returning and he bolted.

I'll say this....it's tough to be the head BB there (same for Ohio State) as FB is obviously king.

Amaker was not good enough.

Beilen outgrew the position and moved on to bigger things.

Juwan was a name, not a coach.

May is an interesting resume. I am sure he is being paid a boat load of money to leave. So, that is a big factor. NBA coaches make bank. But, May started out about as low on the totem pole as they get and was a grinder. Lots of stops. Lots of positions. Lots of success. Just feels like this is the next step up the ladder.

Oh, and Harbaugh left because he had lit a match and set the building on fire.
 
As most of you know I'm probably one of the most cynical people on this board, and even I am quite confident enough in my people-reading skills to be fairly sure Run BMC ain't ditching Iowa for Michigan even if they offered him 1,000 shares of BRK.A.

Disclaimer...if they did offer him 1,000 shares of BRK.A I would have no ill feelings for the guy if he left.
 
Ben is a blue collar dude who knows even if he retired at the end of his Iowa contract he and the next generation of his family would never have to work or take out a loan for anything. Contrary to popular belief, there is a certain class of folk who value their reputation and integrity just as much as money. I like to think I am one of them (like everyone else), but I have not had a multi-bazillion dollar bag in front of me so I don't know. Just like how you could have the toughest, hardest soldier in the world in training but that person may well start shitting his underoos at the first crack of real gunfire aimed at him.

I believe Run BMC is one of those rare folk. Maybe I'm wrong, but he Iowa seems to be his dream job, and I think he loves that Righteous Brothers lovin feelin' he deservedly gets from the Iowa citizenry.

Bennett Stirtz | 6-3 guard | 22 years old | Iowa​

The Raptors need some offensive juice and shooting next to Scottie Barnes and could really use another option who can potentially help to run the offense. I’ve heard Stirtz’s name in a tight window from No. 16 to No. 21, with virtually all those teams seeming to have a significant level of interest. Toronto could have its pick of several guards or wings here, including Stirtz, Anderson, Philon and Carr.

Analysis
Stirtz was one of the best guards in college basketball last season and has positional size to play on or off the ball. I love his game in ball-screen situations. He has the exact blend of high basketball IQ and high skill that I love in players like this. He’s a terrific shooter and a remarkable passer who makes good decisions.
Ultimately, whether Stirtz can be an NBA starter will be determined by whether his defense gets to a strong enough level and whether he can separate from his man. I buy Stirtz being a useful NBA player because of his shooting and decision-making out of ball screens. And he has outs because he is elite, as on catch-and-shoot 3s.
It’s hard for me to see him not sticking in the NBA. But he has things to work on, and I’d feel more comfortable taking him outside the lottery.

I would frame it slightly differently. For most of us, if another employer offered you 25% more money to do the same job for them, and your current employer won't match that, you probably leave. 25% more money can mean a real change for the better for you and your family when you live close to pay check to pay check.

When you start to talk about millions of dollars per year, a raise like that is not really changing your lifestyle for you and your family. With the money he is making at Iowa (a low cost, low tax state) he can buy a massive house, take his kids on any vacation they have time for, drive nice cars, and save enough for generational wealth to accumulate. Adding another million a year---while awesome and who would not take more money--isn't going to materially change how he and his family live. So, why move again?

Iowa money versus Drake money was worth uprooting his family for. I don't think Michigan or Kansas could pay him enough to change his life, so why would he leave his home state and dream job? At some point of wealth, you have what you need and don't need more.
