Lots of Portal Action

But I haven’t seen anything about Iowa. I really expected we could pick up some talent in the portal after such a great run in the tournament. Anyone heard anything?

The cash is and always be and issue for Iowa, was in hopes that we find 2 guys who believe Ben can make them more money in the end vs today. Maybe those guys aren’t out there anymore? These agents are talking guys into the portal by negotiating prices before a guy enters, ncaa has issues that are hurting the product in the court. Where is ISU getting the funds every year to bring in top guys?

Where are you getting this from? There has been a number of reports that Iowa is upping its budget to upwards of 10 million for next year, which would be a nice raise from last season and put us on the upper half of the conference.

Kids are still taking visits and agents are working slowly to see how the market is shaking out. I don't see a ton of commitment news out there, but I bet it starts snowballing soon. A lot of visits happening last weekend and next. Iowa will get a quality center and PG.

Hope you are right. But lots of reports of signings including Clones signing 4 that look to be quality players. We need to get maybe just a couple

Nearly 2,000 kids are in the portal. Its only a two-week window and we just hit the one-week mark. But, that is just to enter the portal. You have to believe that most everyone who wants to jump is already in there. But, kids basically have until next Fall to land somewhere. This past weekend was basically the first legal visitation window for most schools. Things will pick up steam, but it really has only been a week since kids could even formally enter the portal.

Iowa spent A LOT last year and likely has a bigger budget than Iowa State.

What I would say is likely there have been even discussions happening with agents and stuff for a long time. This cycle, I’m not sure the elite 8 run will have a huge impact.

It has been quiet... We've had a couple visits and a few more coming yet. But the lack of a commit yet is a tad ominous. My fingers are crossed on landing that big 7'3 kid. But his visit is over and I haven't seen any commitment from him yet. So hopefully Iowa doesn't get left holding their dick in their hands at the end of all this. We have 2 glaring needs and not filling at least one of them would be a pretty bad deal.

ISU somehow got 5 dudes already to commit to them and they are done. They didn't leave a spot open for that Milan guy to come back to who they all love. So he's either going to the NBA or another college team. I'm guessing that's about $ with them too but who knows I'm not too up on all things ISU

Thinking of the portal results last year has to make you a little concerned. The two players brought in who BMC wasn't familiar with, Hausen and Folguieras, were not super impactful. He'll need better results from whoever he brings in this year if he wants to keep the program's momentum.

Thought Purdue was big on him but the damn Illini got Vaaks so now we will be on the receiving end of what BS did to others lol. Damn Illinois "Baltic Bloc" connection.

I see this morning it’s reported Indiana is signing its 6th from the portal. I’m sure they have a lot of money and it is still Indiana but 6 is impressive

Or it means they had a very disappointing season last year and a lot of guys left. A large portal class is not necessarily a sign of success. Ask Deion.

The fact that Iowa has only had one guy enter the portal (I am not counting Banks) means his guys want to stay with him and keeping building a championship level team.

That said, I am ready for a signing. Like now please.

I am not panicking yet, but am a bit surprised. I just took a quick look around the conference. Most teams have zero or one portal commit. There are outliers that have brought in several commits already. But, we don't seem too far out of the norm.

I wonder if these coaches kind of wait, so they can low ball after some of these guys dont get the offers their agents say that they are worth. Kind of bargain shopping when then portal gets down to the end.

One concern that does creep in to my mind...is Iowa's style of play making us less attractive? Sort of like trying to sell Iowa FB to elite WRs, are elite talents wary of going to a program where they will be coached hard, potentially benched if they have poor attention to detail, and work within an offense that is going to take the shot-clock under 10 on almost every possession? That really appeals to some players, but not everyone.

Ask Deion, or Dusty May.

I'm not sure if they even think that far in. Conference cred for the exposure, the money, playing time, NCAA tourney advancement possibility/winning culture. It isn't like we are a Pete Carill Princeton team either.

Once we has the players that we want at the quality we want we won't have to play like that as much as he had to this first year. They are not going to have that big 7'3" guy throw it back out just because he had his man beat 6 seconds into the possession or the quick point guard he wants blow by and get free but then dribble it back out unless they are running it out at the end. Some steals and blocks can start breaks more than the first year. They were 74.5 points a game and they should end up closer to 80. The Luka/Murray team that finished ranked inn the top 10 was 83.7.

It is what they will want to compete with Illinois, Michigan, Purdue, and ISU. They will end up scoring more to hang with them and give up a few more points but on more possessions. The efficiency is more important. Once they can rebound better with more size and strength it won't be as much one and done fear as they will get the second chance points with more offensive rebounds. They will be able to beat them up into the low 80's than trying to hold them to the mid 60's to low 70's.

It will be a bit different when we can run out to the 9 point lead on Purdue or that nice lead @ ISU or the 12 point lead on Illinois etc. and aren't holding on for dear life to keep it since we will have more weaponry. It is gonna be more enjoyable even though we won't be run and gun but we will have our bursts and have more exciting back and forth big games once we are where we want to be. Just watch! :)

If we get that big guy hopefully .
