Lester

Hope folks are enjoying what he's done and in the middle of doing. Hopefully we really maximize this season. I say that because what do we place the odds at of him returning another yr as OC? The OC whomever it ended up being that would be able to 'fix' Iowa after the BF fiasco was going to have to be pretty dang good. I see him having all kinds of different offers. Some in the pros some in college for either OC or HC at lower levels.

KFs future is tied directly to it cause hell if KF retires Lester is probably on the short list of candidates for it. It's hard to say how BG will conduct that coaching search. She could look in house give it to Wallace as how I think KF would prefer or Lester. Or totally open it up and who knows. Or KF will coach 4 more seasons who the heck knows and everything I just said is malarkey.

But regardless of KF retiring Lester is gonna have options and I hope folks are prepared for the possibility of KF having to search for a new OC again..

I could be wrong but I don't see him leaving. He has said more than once that he loves coaching here under KF and, probably more importantly, he has school aged kids that he would like to keep in a stable environment and not move around every 2-3 years.

If he were to leave I think it would be for the NFL where football is played at the highest level.

Don't get me wrong I'd love to see KF and this staff all stay 3 plus more yrs I'm just not sure how realistic that is in todays college football. I'm just saying Lesters in the process of really making a name for himself if this yr goes how we all hope it might.

I agree on him going to the NFL being a higher possibility. Because taking a sideways OC job in college wouldn't make a ton of sense Iowa's paying him pretty darn well north of a million I think. So he'd have to go for a HC gig but those could be on the table too. Regardless he's going to have options.

I'm no coaching expert but I really like Lester, and I hope he's the next Iowa HC. Obviously the DC position is super important and they'll need to solve for that as well.

I don't see him leaving anytime soon. I live in the area and know he has teenage kids in school and they go to the school our kids went to. I think that anchors his family here for a few years anyway. They like it here and like the school. I also think there is a very good relationship in the coaching family and as others pointed out he could be on the short list so he may just stick around to see what happens there.

Lester is at $1.6M, with bonuses he is at $1.75M. Kids or no kids, it's unrealistic to think almost any coach wouldn't leave for the right opportunity these days.

That said, after this season I think the MAC would be about the highest level of football looking at him as a head coaching candidate. Even that might be a stretch. And he already makes more than any head coach in the MAC (although he would get a 4 year deal or something as head coach). So unless he is chomping at the bit to be a head coach again, I don't think he'd be interested.

Even if Iowa has a good year offensively, I don't think he'd be an NFL coordinator candidate yet (his resume is ok, but not that great). The money is roughly the same, and even if the NFL or another school came dangling $3M, I'm pretty Iowa would match.

Just gut feeling is that he appreciates his current situation, and likes what he is building towards. I think it is likely Iowa's offense only gets better over the next couple years. If he wants to be a head coach again, he might want to see if he can get any traction when Kirk steps down. And if not, he'd likely have a chance to be retained if it is an internal hire...or possibly get a crack as OC at an even better program.

I do like what he's doing. But really need to see more, before I sell the farm for him. So far so good. He hasn't had developmental kids long enough to see what he can do in the long term. If our offense gets us in playoffs, I'm all in!! Hope that happens but have to watch and see. He hasn't improved our Offense to the point that every open head coaching spot is going to want him yet. He gets us up to a top 50 offense (or better) that could change.

If you haven't already you should listen to the ANF Podcast this week. They were highly complimentary of Lester's offense. They said it was the best NFL offense currently running in college FB. Not that it is the best but the only one doing what Tim Lester is doing on offense. They said we are basically running the Green Bay Packers offense. And, they point out that we have legitimate talent now. It makes me excited to see what is ahead. Again, I don't have any knowledge of his thinking but I it seems like he would want to stick around for that.

Good thoughts. A really smart person in this situation would also consider that $1.75M in Iowa goes a lot further than $1.75M in an expensive metro area. It's relatively cheap to live in Iowa. Housing is really cheap compared to most areas.

If he likes it in IC, and his family likes it, why not continue to build?

I don't disagree, but I don't think any D1 coaches really consider housing prices of various metros when making career decisions. It's not how they are wired.

In my mind, Lester's considerations for his future will be two fold. Does he want to coach in the NFL or college? Does he want to be a head coach?

Yeah idk guys. Optimistic for Lester based on previous Iowa offenses but other than that,…

He had a pretty good weapon with rushing qb last year. This year could prove his value, especially with a hard to pick qb battle. But struggling offense in short distance or goal line situations vs NIU…. Well ya… that’s a big yikes that could serve as a warning of things to come vs good defense teams.

Not all that inspiring that a much better roster couldn’t be schemed to find advantage on goal line — and the only answer is Lester needs a running qb package.

That’s called searching for the easy button. Plenty offenses out there that do fine in goalline with a qb that can’t run.

Maybe it’s still a solid idea to prepare a Sullivan goal line look or wild cat with wr that played qb in hs. But other moves should hopefully work this week. spread out defense and zone run it from shotgun, adding a fake motion wr run could help keep from crashing inside.

Also with everything that went right last week, any one else kind of shocked how few attempts of play action pass were attempted? Could be a leave some plays in bag kind of thing, which is valid. Just hope to see that to vonnahme today.

Agreed. He's got a great gig, very low chance of getting canned. Young enough that when KFz retires he'll have plenty of options.

GM/AD: What was your last job and best achievement?
TL: I took over the worst offense in FBS football and turned it into a top 40 unit.

I agree. He really doesn't have to run much past Ferentz so basically, he gets to do as much coaching as he wants without the headaches involved with being a head coach.

His record as a HC at the college level is pretty pedestrian. If he were to leave at some point, I would guess as a QB coach at the next level, with a pathway to OC eventually.

Kirk’s age is the only deterrent for Lester not sticking around. Hard to predict what direction BG will go once Kirk steps down. Lester is part of that Lafluer/Shannonhan/McVay orbit, so he will have plenty of options for the foreseeable future.

I would guess that if Lester stays a total of 5-6 years, and powers Iowa with a good O AND we continue winning 8-10, he would be poised for maybe even a power 5 head coaching position. Even 1 playoff birth would confirm his resume’.

I would rather see him as a head coach at Iowa.
