Late Night With The Hawks Slaughtering the Pitiful Huskies

For those that stayed up for the 2nd half congrats they made it worth it. They did a way better job of keeping their guards from getting into the paint and made it way tougher on them. I'm not sure what the deal is with the slow start to the game cause giving up 48 pts on 77% shooting is video game stuff almost. But they flipped that script to only giving up 26 pts in the 2nd and pretty much won going away. Building up a solid resume. I just hope they can get off that 8/9 seed line to the 6 or 7

Leistikow tweeted out some stats from this west coast trip and their pretty impressive. In the 2 games they shot 59% on fgs. 46% from 3. 28 assists to 9 TOs two of those were of the end of the game intentional variety. Stirtz put up 54 pts 20-28 shooting with 12 assists/1 TO... Not bad at all

Also on the broadcast they brought up that Iowa has held every opponent to under their season avg for pts scored. There's only 1 other school that's also doing that and it's UNI...

Really solid game after we survived the first half. Here are some stats from the game: We won the second half 43-26. 4 turnovers for the entire game. Shot 60% for the game and 47% from three. The only things to nit pick on would be rebounding and free throws. Given Washington's size advantage we were never going to match up rebounding-wise.

I thought going in that this would be a tough game. It played out that way in the first half but these guys really played well in the second half. The offensive efficiency was a thing of beauty. This team is rounding into form and I like what I see.

I fell asleep in the second half, but had a good feeling as I dozed off.

Another solid win. You take that flu infused Minny game away, and this is a pretty flawless resume. If things just go to chalk, as they have pretty much all year, this team, finishes 11-9 in conference. NTS.

Really only 3 TOs! The last one was a team mercy TO as we allowed the shot clock to expire. And we were fine at the line other than Manyawu...0-4...ugh!

I was wondering why Cam was even in the game at that point... Thankfully it didn't matter but after he missed those first two I'd have yanked him. Cause they were in foul immediately mode. Didn't end up mattering but it's one of those things where situationally down the road it sure could

Correct. As soon as they're in foul mode Manyawu should sit and Hausen has to come in. He's 11/11 this year and .846 from the stripe in his career. Manyawu is career .556.

Damn. Maybe I should be a college basketball coach.

Fun game - had a chance to attend in person. My 8th grader went with his basketball team, so my 5th grader in his Jack Nunge jersey and I sat together. We had good tickets that a friend gave us a few rows behind the Iowa bench, which was cool. Here are my behind the scenes tidbits.

This team is pretty tight knit. You can't really fake that kind of thing - clearly a great culture.

McCollum allows for pretty spirited communication from his players, at least his veterans. I'm not saying he doesn't have total control, but he seems fine with them yelling back at him if they disagree on switches or some other feedback they want to give. Especially the four upperclassmen starters. Seems like healthy communications in the heat of battle and they respect they are all trying to get to the same place (again, great relationships rooted in a great culture).

The thing that seemed to piss McCollum off the most were "bad shots"...which he'd scream to his assistants. I got the sense he was better off with the shot clock expiring if they were still moving the ball and trying to find a great shot, than he was with Iowa settling for an average shot with time on the clock. Almost all the bad shot outbursts were due to Folgueiras or Howard overdribbling, getting in deep, and forcing a bad shot instead of kicking it back out.

McCollum came over to get a cup of water right before tip, and the cooler was just up from where we were sitting. I said "Need a good whistle tonight." He looked at me and laughed, with a little smirk. Probably the last time my 5th grader will think I am cool.

Beth was sitting nearby and working a few donors. We locked eyes a couple times. It was nice.

Good for UNI!

I don't think it is an understatement that HN played a role in last night's win. Nice work, Swirl!!

Thanks for sharing.

Exactly. Put your best shooters out there it doesn't matter how they matchup at the other end when you're playing offense defense with TOs being called. You can have 5 PGs out there if you want for that. I think it's been proven at this point Cam can't be trusted in those moments to hit em
