What am I missing? Considering Fitz's previous disdain for IOWA, these comments seemed pretty PC (in a football coach sense).

You're right. In fact he was down right respectful of Hawk fans and the intense atmosphere in Kinnick.
I was in the front row 45yd line of the NW game last season and it was intense in the stands on the Cats sideline. Fitz knows it.
That's why he dressed up 5-6 skinny "walk-on 'players'" who looked more like clarinet players in the marching band and had them stay between the fans and the coaches/subs for the unit on the field. Fans were continually after the skinnies instead of starters.
But players can hear us. After making plays/scores, you don't think NW's starters came over to the sideline and made a point to come a within couple of yards of the stands and pump each other up and yell a few expletives "to each other" about their opponent?
Then they would go to their unit huddle with the skinnies center stage again.
