KenPom 1-29-26, Plus Sort of an Indictment of Fran...

Also this...

KenPom uses offensive and defensive ratings which are points scored or allowed per 100 pssession adjusted for opponent.

They are listed as ORtg and DRtg respectively...

Below are the final ratings since 2015 including 2026 YTD. This really puts things into perspective as far as what could've been if Fran could've gotten his guys to play D. It's friggin staggering if you look at the gap between the ratings. We all knew Fran's teams were horribly imbalanced so I'm not telling you anything new, but I think Run BMC has so far shown he has at least some of the defensive mojo that it takes to be well-balanced and squeak out some of the games that will make a difference.

Before anyone brings up the fact that the current rankings have a higher proportion of non-cons than a full season at this point, those ratings are adjusted for opponent.

Stats tell us what our eyes already know. Fran could not coach defense and it was his undoing.

Last night's game is a perfect example of why defense is so damned important. When you cannot hit the broad side of the barn on offense---which happens to everyone---your defense can still keep you in the game, which is what happened that first 10 minutes of the game. Anyone can have an off shooting half or night, but McCollum does not accept an off defensive night. Defense is effort and attitude. That CAN always be present.

We have 4 games left we absolutely should win. That would get us to 10 wins in conference and clearly in the tourney. We have a couple toss up games and then we will have 4 chances at resume building games against Nebbie twice, Michigan and Purdue. It sucks we got Purdue and Nebbie twice this season, but if we can win just 1 of those Top Ten games, and otherwise take care of business, we could be looking at what, like a 5 seed?

Don't know what y'all are talking about. You can still buy the "Fran McCaffery: Building a Championship Defense" video on Amazon for just $39.99!

Seriously.
1) I just looked at Amazon, I have Prime and there’s no free shipping so add $7.99 to that.

2) Go check out the reviews. Solid gold.

10 conference wins was kinda my personal bar for calling BMC’s first year a success. I think they get there.

Getting Purdue and Nebraska twice are golden opportunities, not unfortunate. Losing those games doesn't hurt much.

Losing to Minnesota did. Losing to Rutgers would have hurt worse.

As for Fran, his best defensive team was clearly the year we made it to the NIT championship. We had Dawgs who could play defense other years but they frequently ended up transferring out. Connor and JBo could clearly run an offense as evidenced by the KenPom ratings, but getting out of the first weekend of the NCAA'S proved too elusive a task.

Correct. Those losses won’t be held against them and playing tough teams will do nothing but good for this squad.

Up 4 spots to #15 in Kenpom! Minnesota's upset of Mich St helped. MN is 76 now. Our D rating actually fell to 21, but that is still a far cry from anything we ever had with Fran. MSU is still top 10, so 4/5 losses are "good" losses.
