Environment at Carver was pretty laid back today. I think there were just under 8k which is a great crowd for most... pretty average for us and pretty "sunday-like" but a lot of that was the opponent. NW has a few diamonds in the rough but overall are not a great team. If you listened to Ironside, his thoughts mirrored mine (as they often do) - not good enough... need a better performance against an opponent like this.
This coming weekend is brutal with away matches at OSU and PSU, both of whom could beat us. Both are young and very talented. I'd say we're a slight favorite at OSU and a slight underdog at PSU.
Again, this match was a tale of two teams - one was a team of wresters ready to wrestle and dominate, pushing the tempo and the offense. The other was a team of, mostly, young guys who still don't seem to get it. Waiting around for something to happen doesn't work in this sport. You need to take shots, be aggressive and wear your opponent down. If you're wrestling lesser competition, the worst thing you can do is let them stay in a match and that's what we've been doing way too much.
HWT - Telford. I don't know what to say. Started out the first minute like he was maybe going to turn things around. Looked a little more active and took a shot. Then he went in the tank for the rest of the match against a guy he beat earlier this year, but that gave him trouble. He didn't shoot, he was content to tie up in the middle and when he had a chance to win it with a reversal (he was holding the leg in the air and simply needed an ankle trip to score two - he didn't get it) he didn't get it done. As soon as he didn't get that point, I turned to my friend and said, "that was his chance to win the match"... it was. Telford needs to get better fast. I would start Rasing next match.
125 - McD is running like a well oiled machine right now. The only thing he didn't do in this match was get a pin. Utterly dominating... and that's against Mele, the #7 guy who is a seriously talented wrestler. He has a bum leg, but McD was still all over him. He's looking like a finalist at 125 right now.
133 - Rinse and repeat of 125. Ramos is unstoppable right now. He bent his guy over like a rubber chicken and simply forced his shoulders down for the pin. Nobody wants a piece of him right now... his opponent wouldn't even come to the center of the match at the beginning until the last possible moment. Tony stands there staring straight ahead like a crazy-person for upwards of a minute. Love this kid. Also looking like a finalist at 133.
141 - This is the Montell Marion we know. One has to wonder if weight/health has been an issue for him because he was blazing today. Right from the whistle he was blowing through shots and dropping his guy like a rag doll. Scored upwards of 20 points and just wore his guy down. His quick movement and shots are a thing of beauty when he's rolling. No one on our team is even close to Montell in terms of speed. If he wrestles like this, he will be in the NCAA finals.
149 - I feel like a broken record but... too little to late. If you wait until the last 40 seconds to start your offense you're going to lose more often than not. The opponent can stall out and underhook you to stop your shots and it just makes things way too difficult. I don't understand why match after match this isn't getting through. Had a chance to win it at the end by finishing a shot but couldn't do it. In my opinion, Skoniezcky (sp?) can't get here fast enough to fill this spot. Honestly, though, I'd start Dziewa here... he's the polar opposite of Kelly in terms of energy and offense. I know they're thinking 141 for him after Montell graduates but he tore it up during his one dual match at 149 this year.
157 - Moore. Simply overmatched. Not much to say here except a DSJ/Welch matchup would have been fun to watch. Too often this year, the 149 synopsis above could be copied and pasted here for Moore but today he was simply pounded which is just as bad. Did put up a fight in the 3rd to stave off a major decision but that's not saying much.
165 - Evans is a hammer. He's growing by leaps and bounds with each passing week and he's going to be the team leader with Ramos when McD leaves. He's a methodical beast that will take you down and bend you in half when you're on the mat. His top ride, with the leg in, is really tough and he's a pinner. His attitude is great and he's always looking for pins. Didn't give up a single point today. Really fun to see this weight filled by this type of wrestler for the next 3.5 years.
174 - Great match by Lofthouse. Beat an opponent that he recently lost to and looked good doing it. Good defense, in control... excellent shots when he set them up. Most of all, and something you don't see out of him a lot, powerful riding. Much like Evans, he got on top and punished his guy. What was really fun to watch was, a couple times, he rode through some really tough escape attempts and tumbles by his guy where most people would have simply let go. That makes your opponent really think and wears them out quick. Lofthouse is a solid wrestler and a very good threat for AA this year.
184 - Wagner has to impress you. He is a .500 wrestler who is going to go to med-school but he works his *** off each time he comes out. Doesn't do anything flashy but he brings it each night. I don't think we'll get far with Wagner but we're not just rolling over at this weight. Did a good job today with TDs/releases and nearly scored a major.
197 - Gambrall. I figured today would be the day he'd come out of his funk since the opponent was no good. Again, he circled at the middle of the mat, took no shots until the last 30-40 seconds and got beat by giving up 2 stalling points... 2. When was the last time an Iowa wrestler lost a match by giving up 2 stalling points? I'm so frustrated here and i'm sure Brands is too. What can you say to the kid? You know he can wrestle... he got 3rd last year at Nationals! It's mind boggling to me and simply frustrating to watch. We have no chance for AA at this weight... I don't even see GG getting selected from the BT tourney at this point.
Overall, very solid at the low weights and very shaky up top. When DSJ joins the lineup again, the team will be very solid but right now, there are a lot of holes. Luckily our good guys, are REALLY good and it covers up a lot of mistakes but the Hawks need to get better fast and they better have their heads on straight for this weekend. PSU will be coming at them like a Mack truck... angry about last year.
Go Hawks
