Jon you're great, but......

Good teams almost always have a turd game or two every year. We had the UNI and NW debacles last year. I'm just glad we survived today. Definitely was not our best game. But I think coming into this game and NW everybody knows that these are teams that give us fits. The offensive styles essentially take our D-line out of the equation with the quick passing game.

I also look at it this way. We almost never win games where we shoot ourselves in the foot with dumb penalties and poor special teams. Usually we are able to take a lead and make it look like we are going to overcome it only to lose in the end. Today we got a break. Let's kick the crap out of NW now.

I want you on my team. EXACTLY!

I am a "rah rah" guy because I'm a fan. I grew up in Kinnick, and I about had a stroke during that game. Hey, I'll take a win, and I hope the team is very focused to beat the kitties next week.

They still have a ton to play for, and not all teams can say that in November. I'm stoked because I'm going to be at all three of these games to close out the year. Where's my winter coat?

Giving up a drive for the winning TD has happened 3 different times this year. That is something worth being concerned about.

And yet we only have 2 losses.... something doesn't add up here.. what could it be?

We thought we'd rack up points on Indiana's lousy defense, too. It wasn't just poor execution in the redzone today. Indiana had receivers covered, and stuffed the few runs we attempted inside the 10. They made plays as much as we didn't execute.

Northwestern's defense is bad, but a bad defense stepped up to stop us inside the 10 4 times today.

DJK was open on at least two of those slant routes; Rick overthrew him on all three. Meyer missed a field goal from 22 yards out. Iowa racked up 460 yards of offense yesterday and a freshman running back making his first got 130 yards.

If you want to continue the "Iowa didn't win, Indiana lost" song, you also have to admit that if Iowa converts on any of those slant passes, or if Meyer makes that field goal, that it doesn't matter if Belcher catches that ball.

What all of you are failing to recognize is that not only did the D get a stop on the last drive they also got a clutch stop the drive before. 3rd and medium near midfield with 4 min left and we make a great play to force them to punt. If we don't make that stop we don't win the game.

You can't fairly judge a unit based on one drive or one play. Indiana comming into that game averaging 400 yards of offense, we held them to 300. Indiana's QB came into this game averaging 300 yards passing, 7 yards per attempt, and 65% completion percentage. We held him to 222 yards passing, 4.8 yards per attempt, and 58% completion percentage.

Lastly you are grossly mischaracterizing the last series when you say we did nothing to stop them. On first down we forced a throw away with Clayborn draped all over the QB. On 2nd down Greenwood jumped a square in and nearly intercepted the pass. On 3rd down everything deep was covered and we forced them to attempt a meaningless 2 yard pass in the flat that was incomplete. 4th down a receiver does get open and we force them to execute a great throw great catch scenario that they don't.

You also don't share my level of reality in that you people keep excusing away the fact that this team isn't as good as it could have been. But hey, if that makes your world bearable, have at it.

Chicken little? That's laughable, considering some of you are carrying around empty sacks between your legs.

This team has problems, but you go on and act like everything is perfect.

And yet, it's typical. This forum, like any other, gets a mob mentality of "We're right, you're wrong, and if you don't like it, we'll call you names because we have the intellect of children."

It's beyond frustrating - it's just downright ******* stupid.

Irony?

You are absolutely spot-on.

Rick had three (or maybe four?) open looks in the end zone. He overthrew them all. TDs were there. He just missed them.

Hey, I'll say it again and again, I just love a bad win!

Maybe the team will have a great practice week, and maul the kitties.

The defense did not force a stop on the final drive. Indiana fudging it up with 3 drops on passes my grandma could have caught does not constitute a stop.

That's like the vault analogy I used either in this thread or a different one on the same topic: a vault is supposed to protect the money. Robbers break in, and forget to grab the money on their way out. Just because the money is still in the vault does not mean that the vault did it's job. The robbers (Indiana's receivers) were just woefully inept.

Chappell made good throws, but there was nobody covering the receivers except on the pass that Greenwood almost picked. 3 of the last 4 plays, the receiver was wide open. Nobody on the defense batted those 3 passes away, or made a tackle just short of the goalline. Indiana's receivers just dropped easy to catch passes. We didn't force the incompletions.

Good Lord, let it go. We get it you don't think they stopped them. Whether they dropped a pass or we make a tackle or whatever, the fact is we got a stop. They didn't score we got the ball back, we won.

What good does it do to worry?

Well, what good does it to do to post on a message board at all? You're not on the field, so what you say, whether it's positive or negative, has no effect on the team at all.

So why do you point out what you see as worrying, when this entire site is, for all intents and purposes, pointless?

Jon's a cheerleader, a pollyanna. Only problem is: Iowa doesn't get better. IMO anyone or team can always get better.

You realize that what Jon writes has nothing to do with anything Iowa does on the field, right? And that the same goes for everyone else on the board?

I understand people wanting Iowa to play better. What I don't get is those who act like the fans need to feel a certain way after a game. I can't do anything about Iowa's red zone scoring, so instead of worrying about it all week, I'm going to enjoy the fact that we won a game that many teams would have lost, and then cheer for us against Northwestern. I'm sure the coaches and the team will have a different approach, but that's why they're on the team and I'm a fan.

I too remember the days of sitting in my car listening to the Z broadcast another overwhelming Hawks loss in those 1-2 win seasons because they never got TV coverage and a win was extremely rare! Do I get frustrated when they play like they did yesterday, you bet I do but I have learned to accept the ugly WINS along with the beauty of the Michigan State game and move on. We need to be worrying about getting ready for NW next week who seems to have our number than ******** about not winning pretty this week. 7-2 and still in the hunt for a Big 10 title beats the heck out of the old am radio in the 73 Cutlass and 1-8. GO HAWKS!!!!

Congratulations, you're old!

I suppose you also walked 3 miles to school uphill ever day in 10 feet of snow, too?

I didn't realize that pointing out the fact that some of you are nutless wonders when it comes to being honest about Iowa football is an insult. But thanks for 'enlightening' me.

Nothing proves you are not a "nutless wonder" like calling some body out on a message board.

....and then there's just some days when you're the fly, and other days when you're the windshield.

I was accused of being a 'chicken little' for daring to think anything other than puppies and rainbows about this team.

So, if you're going to call ME out, grow a pair and make some effort to READ what everybody else is posting first.

Yes, I'm 41.

You seem to have a maturity problem, QWERTY commando.

Go cheer for a power like Texas (oops).

I don't think a lot of the positive people on this board are "nutless wonders." Iowa could very well finish in the top 10 again this year. I will be at all of the final three games, screaming in the cold. Will you, nut-filled wonder?

Qwerty commando? What's next? Going to continue to show your maturity by targeting my post count?

And yes, apparently attending every game makes you so much more of a better fan than everybody else, just like being born in time to watch Iowa completely suck.

I grew up an Iowa fan, I will remain an Iowa fan. But it's time for you to wake up to the fact that nobody is going to grovel at your feet because you got to see bad football.

I'm also a Cubs fan, and I sure as hell don't revel in the fact that they've pretty much sucked for +100 years. You shouldn't hold up Iowa's bad years as some standard of fandom either.

This is just factually inaccurate. Again this is precisely what happend the last four plays Indiana held the ball.

1st and 10
Clayborn beats a RB cut block around the edge and forces the QB to flee the pocket. He throws a ball in relative vicinity of a WR as AC is dragging him to the turf just to avoid the sack.

2nd and 10
Greenwood jumps a square in pattern and the ball glances off his finger tips for a near interception.

3rd and 10
With nothing open deep the QB throws a rocket into the left flat for what would be a 2 yard gain. The receiver leaps and it goes right through his hands. The CB on that side for Iowa was closing as the receiver leaps and unless he completely whiffs on the tackle he's down right there.

4th and 10
A receiver gets open and Indiana fails to execute a "good throw good catch" type scenario.

This is 100% fact. Your arguement that Indiana stopped themselves because they dropped 3 on target easy catches is inacurrate on it's face.

Please, we are 22-4, last 26 games. Our offense sputtered, our special teams need work. The defense held Indy to half their normal output.
I think I will put this in the win column and get fired up for a tough game Saturday.
