The preseason surprise right now for Iowa? Freshman PF Ryan Kriener. Currently leading the Hawkeyes in rebounding, per Fran McCaffery.

Fran McCaffery told me that Tyler Cook is the best freshman that he's had since he's been at Iowa. 6-9 forward will be a starter in 16-17.

Fran McCaffery told me that Iowa still hasn't decided on a starting point guard. Both Christian Williams and Jordan Bohannon in mix.

I don't like the fact Williams hasn't ran away with the starting job
Maybe it's a concern. Certainly how I took it initially as well. Another spin could be that Bohannon is better than we thought. Or maybe this is how Fran feels he needs to keep Williams focused and motivated? Hard to say until we see a game.

It could be coach speak. Hopefully its because freshman Bohannon is comparable to freshman Gesellschaft tho.

I wouldn't look into it - there's a competition going on at the PG position that is your teams biggest question mark heading into this season. Why name a starter 2 weeks before the 1st game and interrupt that?

PG position has been discussed at length on this board of course, for good reason. Maybe Bohannon is better than many on this board have given him credit for? Who knows. It's a position of concern for sure, either way.

I think Fran is just enamoured with the idea of having a PG who can shoot. But having a 6'7" defender at PG is just as enticing.

It's interesting to get some national pub, I suppose, although all that information really came from the recent media sesssion at practice.

As far as the scrimmage goes apparently it was only 20 minutes of live action, and the rest was situational practice. I cannot wait for Friday night so we can sort out the PG situation, starting lineup, and get a look at the newcomers.

If it was just Cook and Wagner, do you really think he would just come right out and say Cook is better? I don't .

Yes, he already said Cook is the best freshman he has ever had. If CW was clearly better Fran would be hyping him up right now.

He has no problem saying Cook is better than all the other people at his position.
He said that Cook is better than Wagner when Wagner was a freshman. Fran didn't say that Cook is a better player than Wagner. Both Cook and Wagner are talented players. The poster said he is the best freshman he has had at Iowa, it didn't say that he was his best overall freshman. Iowa is pretty deep in the frontcourt, but it sounds like he is going to need Bohannon. That could be why he is building him up. Bohannon must be doing pretty good though.

He has pretty much came out and said Cook is going to be a stud this year and is going to start. Fran has never been one to temper expectations in the preseason so I'm not sure how this can be turned into a positive unless Bohannon is way better than expected and I've heard his defense is still a major concern

Fran will have no choice but to play JB at point, this season. There really is no reason to name a pg since they will both have to play. But he can also build confidence in JB, as others have stated, by showing he's starting material. Personally, I feel CW will be a good starter and I also think JB will be able to compete. He just needs confidence.

I like the tweet about Kreiner. He hasn't gotten much pub but could be a really solid player for us the next 2-3 years.

I guess I see a pretty big difference between saying a guy like Cook (who I'm sure every player sees his talent) is better than all freshmen he's had, and coming right out and saying player A is better than player B when the two are competing for the same spot.

Either way tho, it doesn't say anything about how good or bad they are. just that they're close.

I have said it before, and I will say it again: The player definitions in college basketball are nearly all gone. No more PG, SG, SF, C, etc. This may well be the first team that is truly a Fran Mac team, in terms of the skill sets. He will have traditional "forwards" who will bring the ball up the court, regardless of who the PG is. And, Centers are gone forever. It is going to be a really fun year, full of inconsistency and transition, but really a lot of fun. Look to the future. BTW, I am an old guy.

There are still PG's in college basketball. It's pretty much PG's, wings and forwards.
