Johnny Mullings

Anyone else find it sheer lunacy that we gave a scholly to a kid WHO DID NOT EVEN GET INVITED TO CAMP!!!! I mean, you have got to be kidding me. I still cannot believe that. Best deal ever for Mullings.

I can understand that sometimes coaches miss on a guy, give him a scholly and it just does not work out. These things happen. However, several big mistakes here (1) Giving a scholly to a punter unless he is a HS All American line Donahue (2) Giving a scholly to a punter who apparently takes a nap before kicking the ball.

Maybe Mullins will pull a Guthrie and vastly improve. You never know.

I hope so, but I have never heard of a guy on scholarship not getting an invite to camp, which is when you are supposed to get better. Sounds like they are just throwing their arm up. Maybe that is a normal occurrence, I don't know.

It's happened plenty of times at Iowa before. Furlong was a player on 'ship ... and he repeatedly wasn't invited to camp.

As Homer noted, it has happened many times at Iowa since KF became coach. I can remember back in early years, when Aramis Haralson, a highly regarded WR/DB was not invited. Apparently he didnt pass a physical conditioning test. Then there was the year 1 or 2 DBs didnt get invited (Price and someone else). Last year Jake Reisen and Furlong not included. Reisen was invited this year but has not played much, if at all.

Not sure how much it happens at other schools but know it has been regular occurence with Iowa in recent years.

Yes he did. IIRC, it was partially blocked. I may be wrong though because it was very late at that point and I had downed quite a few brews by then.

Yes, it was partially blocked. Kicked way high in the air, nearly straight up, and just missed going through the uprights. We were at the game and confused as we thought it made it through.

Should the coaches have invited him to camp simply cuz he was on scholarship?

Richie Williams Adolphus Shelton ('02 Purdue game ended on his pick) were both left out of camp a few years back.

My issue, is how does a guy get a scholarship that is not even good enough to come to practice? Sounds like it happens from time to time.

The coaches apparently mis-evaluated his talent when they offered a scholly. I'm glad they didn't compound the error by letting that effect their decision of whom to invite to camp.

From what I remember, you can only have "x" number of kids at camp. You know what you have in a punter, so maybe don't waste the spot at camp and he works out on his own? Guthrie was maybe clearly the guy to the coaches so get another kid in camp like say DL or DB were we clearly needed guys. I'm just guessing

It might not be at this point, but it could be in a year or two. I'm skeptical, but I'm trying to stay open-minded toward Mullings' chances long-term.
If he doesn't have it figured out by now, I doubt he ever will. Probably would have lost his scholarship by now if he was on an SEC team.

I think this is most likely the explanation. I think he'll be kicking for us soon, just be patient.

This is old news so you may be familiar with what slimy Nick Saban has been doing. All within NCAA rules apparently.

Is Nick Saban playing fast and loose with medical scholarship rules? | : : Lonely Tailgater : :

But it should be emphasized that the player still receives a financial scholarship. It is merely reclassified as a "Medical Hardship" scholarship. Can you say "Football Factory"? Coach Ferentz has alluded to this unethical practice in the past. Clearly puts "honest" programs at a disadvantage.
