Jarryd Cole on Lickliter and McCaffery - Great Read!

I liked Gatens' awareness that they're very close to having a few more wins. BUT, that it's those little things that differentiate a good team from a not-so-good team.

I am just so impressed with Jared Cole, & more as an individual than a b-ball player. This guy had ample times to say the F with it & transfer & stuck with the program. This says a lot, especially during a program that was going thru so much transition.

He's had some hard times at Iowa with the coaching changes & more his injuries, but, he was loyal. And for that reason alone, I will always think of him as one of my all-time favorite Hawkeyes, football or basketball!! Thank you for your committment Jared Cole & may you have good fortunes in your future.

Now, come to think of it, I wonder how he would have fared on the football field????

Love to hear Fran is a players coach. We need a coach that connects with his players and it will help with recruiting.

Couldn't agree more. What a great Hawk.

All of the recent articles about Cole have been very good. It is very interesting to get a player's perspective on Lickliter.

The articles confirm what many of us knew or suspected. First, Lickliter did not have very good personal relationships with the players. Second, the players did not like Lick's system. Finally, the players were not having fun.

Spot on. I always thought that while Alford clearly was influenced by Bob Knight,it was Indiana HS coach Lick who really bought into Knights general philosophy of bb as simply hard work and fun/entertainment was not part of the picture. Add in the religious/puritan overtones of the ''Butler Way'' and you got one head coach that is joyless to play for as young 2010-era players. Lick was a perfect small town indiana HS coach...should have stayed there...cept for the 6.6 million,I guess.

Again, what could Barta been thinking? Who did he really talk to? I know the COY award was all glistening, but did he go deeper? Barta got his one mulligan, and I like Fran, but that is three lost years, which left us in a deeper hole.

When Tyler Smith came out of that first meeting with a scowl on his face I was troubled.
When Lick drove away Tony Freeman, I was very concerned. It was a huge red flag,as Tony was a good kid.
When Jake Kelly,Jeff Peterson,Aaron Fuller,David Palmer, and Anthony Tucker followed them out the door, the hemorraging in the program was out of control.
And yet, Jarryd Cole hung tough. I like this young man,and admire his determination, and perspective. I wish him well in whatever he decides to do..and am confident he will succeed in life. And he will always be a fine Hawkeye...Thanks Jarryd!!!

I look at Jarryd Cole the same way I do Laddel Betts. Tough, hard-nosed leaders who gave it their all and showed loyalty to crappy teams when they probably could have had better careers at other places. Through their hard work and determination, they made their teams and teammates better.

Barring a miracle in the BTT, both will also have graduated without being rewarded in post-season play (Betts via injury). But both can hold their heads high knowing that they started a turnaround in their respective programs.

Great read.

Tells you a lot about Fran. It also makes you wonder how in the hell does Lick get a D1 coaching job. He slid into his role at Butler but HOW our AD ever thought he would be a good fit is beyond me.

I got to talk to Jarryd during that interview session, and was thoroughly impressed with his answers. I asked him what kind of legacy he wanted to leave behind, and he gave me a very good, humble answer: It's really hard to define your own legacy. Other people do that for you, and I hope they have good things to say about me.

Great guy, great Hawkeye.

Anyone remember who the Iowa football player was who said (paraphrasing) "If Iowa football was a stock, I would definitely buy"? It was a senior who said it after the 2000 season I believe. That's kind of what I thought of when I read the article. Hopefully Iowa basketball has the same turnaround.
