Iowa Women's Draw

I am surprised there isn't more talk about this. Biggest screw job in sports this year if you ask me.

Folks here aren't nearly as interested in the women's team as you guys are. It's too bad, because those people miss out on seeing a pretty good team.

And I agree, awful seeding/matchup/location. ISU's draw isn't that great, either.

True about ISU's draw... but let's examine the difference:

Iowa somehow draws an 11 seed which is the #20 AP ranked team and has to play them on their home court. It makes absolutely no sense. Zags should be seeded much higher and even then because of the screwy NCAA "home court" thing Iowa has to go on the road to play at team that has only lost once at home all season (to freaking Stanford, by 6 points) when that team is the much lower seed. It's terrible.

I am a kinda fan of women's basketball. I usually don't go to more than one game a year but I'll watch when they are on TV. I am a fan of Iowa now because of young Nesbitt and I want to see her and Iowa have success. Was really bummed when she got hurt but you have to admire her tenacity playing through the injury.

If you just put everything else aside, I'm trying to figure out why on earth they have a regional in Spokane. It just makes no sense... 500 miles from everywhere, expensive flights, etc. From a purely logistical sense it seems to fly in the face of everything you would want for a championship regional.

And of course it would all somehow result in Iowa getting screwed.

i agree, the whole thing seems fishy.

why does a lower seed team (#6) have to go on the road to play a higher seeded team (#11) ON THEIR HOME COURT no less?

talk about something that very easily could be psychologically deflating!

Notre Dame is a #2 seed playing their 1st game against #15 Utah in Salt Lake City! Texas A&M is a #2 seed in Shreveport, LA with a possible 2nd round game against Louisiana Tech. Now, both #2 seeds should be much better than who they are playing, but this shows all you need to know about the women's tourney.

Actually A&M is like 30 miles from Shreveport. That's really not a bad drive for them.
College Station, TX to Shreveport is 230 miles or so, but I get your point. It's not that far. Notre Dame at Utah? Come on! :)

And, Iowa did get a bad draw - no question there.

Sorry, I made the drive from Shreveport to Houston once and it didn't seem that far. My bad.

I have heard that 230 miles in Texas translates to 30 miles in Iowa! :D

Your point still stands. It wasn't that bad a draw for Texas A&M.

They’ll also undoubtedly queue up Doris Burke, an ESPN analyst.
Burke projected a Gonzaga-UCLA second-round matchup, leaving the Hawkeyes saying, “Wait, what about us?” during the NCAA women’s basketball selection show Monday night at Kinnick Stadium.
“They’re already counting us out,” said guard Jaime Printy. “We’ll get some motivation from that.”
The Hawkeyes (22-8) drew a No. 6 seed in the Spokane Regional. Their reward: a hot, high-scoring team on its home floor.
No. 11 seed Gonzaga (28-4) is the champion of the West Coast Conference. The Bulldogs have won 18 straight games, are averaging 86.1 points per game and have eclipsed the 100-point mark on eight occasions.
“I really don’t know much about them,” Iowa Coach Lisa Bluder said. “I’m anxious to watch film later tonight.”
Tipoff will be 3 p.m. (Iowa time) Saturday at the McCarthey Athletic Center. The winner advances to face No. 3 seed UCLA (27-4) or No. 14 seed Montana (18-14) on Monday.
Iowa was selected for the fourth straight year and improved upon its 8 seed from a year ago, when it advanced out of the first round by defeating Rutgers, then was blasted by eventual national runner-up Stanford, 96-67, in Round 2.
“I am happy with our seed, but we’re facing a very formidable opponent,” said Bluder, who addressed her team about taking “swagger and emotion” to eastern Washington.
As for Burke’s comments?
“I’m sure (the selection show) was taped, and we’ll definitely talk about it,” Bluder said. “We’ll talk about how we’re the underdog.
“We’ve got to have a little chip on our shoulders.”

When comparing Iowa and ISU, the Clones have the better opportunity to advance to Round 2, however I think Iowa has the better shot at a potential Sweet 16 run. Granted, either team making it to the 2nd weekend would be a big surprise, but if the Hawks can beat Gonzaga, they'll likely get UCLA on a truly neutral court. On the other side, if ISU beats Marist, they'll likely get Duke, at Cameron Indoor.
