Wrestling isn’t like football where there’s a million and a half qualified elite guys to take jobs. It’s a way bigger crapshoot.
Kyle Syder? NLWC guy. Ain’t gonna be lured away to Iowa.
Kyle Dake? NLWC guy.
Burroughs? Hates freestyle and is the most vocal person in the country saying collegiate wrestling needs to switch to freestyle because folk is why we sick in the Olympics and international wrestling. I heartily agree, btw, but I digress.
David Taylor was available but again, Penn State guy and OSU paid him major bank.
Spencer Lee? Head case fighting demons and would be a carbon copy of the Brands.
Schwab? Unknown name to any recruits outside Iowa, doesn’t have the resume or experience and would be Zalesky 2.0. Again most importantly, in a sport where recruiting is literally everything, how would a name like Schwab differentiate himself in a world where Iowa is a bunch of notches lower on the NIL totem pole?
Money is everything in this sport now, guys. Time to accept it. Give the Brands’ $10 million a year and they’ll never lose another dual ever. Just like Sanderson will never lose another dual or natty until some bigger donor comes along at a different school (ain’t gonna happen).
I just follow international instead. Better sport, more exciting, and not wrecked by NIL. No pro leagues to earn millions so everyone is there for a shot at glory and nothing more.
I REPEAT:
Collegiate wrestlers are in the sport for money now, period. Wrestling used to be a "pure" collegiate sport because there was no way to make a living out of it after college was done. You can coach, yes, but that's a different job...it's not wrestling and you aren't getting paid to perform the sport you're good at.
Now, wrestlers in college know they can make few million over their careers and they have to do everything they can to get as much as they can, wherever they can. There's no NBA or NFL waiting for them when they're done. International wrestlers in the US make less than minor league baseball players which is gas money, meals, and lodging. Guys competing in international wrestling are there for one reason...a shot at a medal. It's honorable. It's pure in the sense that they aren't there for the money. And it's one of the many reasons international freestyle is a better sport to watch and follow.
