Iowa vs NCAA

This may be a dumb idea but I am bored so...

The hawks have set a team record with 8 shutouts in a season, and (the post season still pending) have a chance to stamp themselves as one of the top teams of all time, so just for fun, as the hawks are a team of all stars how would they do against a team of all stars in a fictional dual?

Theres only a few things I would adjust to this, 1) the lineup includes beatty, but not slaton, beatty is injured (not his fault) slaton has (seemingly) made his own bed as far as grades go. 2) in the sake of fairness the all star team would be comprised of intermats top ranked wrestlers. (even though i personally disagree with escobedo being ranked ahead of nickerson, and other rankings) so heres how the matchups would be in this scenario 3) and Kerr gets the start at 57 as he's proven he can hang with the top dawgs at this weight:

125 #4 Matt McDonough (Iowa) vs #1 Angel Escobedo (Indiana)
133 #3 Daniel Dennis (Iowa) vs #1 Jayson Ness (Minnesota)
141 #7 Montell Marion (Iowa) vs #1 Kyle Dake (Cornell)
149 #1 Brent Metcalf (Iowa) vs #2 Lance Palmer (Ohio St)
157 Jake Kerr (Iowa) vs #1 Dustin Schlatter (Minnesota)
165 #4 Ryan Morningstar (Iowa) vs #1 Andrew Howe (Wisconsin)
174 #2 Jay Borschal(Iowa) vs #1 Mack Lewnes (Cornell)
184 #12 Phil Keddy (Iowa) vs #1 Kirk Smith (Boise State)
197 #4 Chad Beatty (Iowa) vs #1 Jake Varner (Iowa State)
285 #10 Dan Erekson (Iowa) vs #1 Jarad Rosholt (Oklahoma St)

I think this would be alot closer then most people would think, and I am interested to see how others would view this.

Interesting thought. I am not a wrestling expert, but in my limited knowledge of these athletes, I would say McDonough, Dennis, Metcalf and Borschel would all have a 50% chance or better of winning.

Marion could probably beat anyone or lose to anyone in the top 10.

Our backup Heavyweight almost beat Rosholt, so I would think Erekson would have a chance there.

M* couldn't get to Howe last year but you know it would be a close match and maybe, just maybe he could pull it out.

Beatty over Varner? Probably not, but a chance.

I don't know a thing about Kirk Smith, so I can't even say with Keddy, but he's been so inconsistent this year, I would guess that's a loss. And Kerr would definitely lose, but could hopefully keep it within a regular decision.

I think, you're right, it would be closer than maybe you would first think. Do we get to host this hypothetical meet in Carver? If so, I'll take the Hawks :)

I agree, it would be close, but you gotta think that the Hawks would pick up some bonus points while not allowing any against them.

125 #4 McDonough (Iowa) def #1 Angel Escobedo (Indiana) m dec. 11-3
133 #3 Daniel Dennis (Iowa) def #1 Jayson Ness (Minnesota) dec. 9-6
141 #1 Kyle Dake (Cornell) def #7 Montell Marion (Iowa) dec 8-4
149 #1 Metcalf (Iowa) def #2 Lance Palmer (Ohio St) tech fall 25-10
157 #1 Dustin Schlatter (Minnesota) def Jake Kerr (Iowa) dec 8-2
165 #1 Andrew Howe (Wisconsin) def #4 Ryan M* (Iowa) dec 5-3 sv
174 #2 Jay Borschal(Iowa) def #1 Mack Lewnes (Cornell) m dec 14-2
184 #12 Phil Keddy (Iowa) def #1 Kirk Smith (Boise State) dec 6-4 sv
197 #1 Jake Varner (Iowa State) def #4 Chad Beatty (Iowa) dec 6-5 ot/sv
285 #1 Jarad Rosholt (Oklahoma St) def #10 Danimal (Iowa) dec 4-3 ot/sv

Hawks win 19-15

I'm no wrestling historian...but can you really say that a team with 1 wrestler ranked #1 is the best team ever? I understand that Borschel should be considered the best wrestler at his weight...and McD will be a very tough out in the tournament...but I would have to think that Iowa has had far better teams than this one.

The 1996-97 team is probably the greatest ever, they set the record for most points scored at Nationals and tied the record with 5 individual titles. Iowa won something like 22 straight matches that tournament.

The scoring record of 170 will never be touched and it should have been six titles. I still don't understand why Mena chose top.
