The Iowa defense just ruined an awesome pitching performance by Dreyer and no offense. The leftfielder for the Hawks should have nailed the runner at the plate, had plenty of time, on the first throw. The 2nd hit that scored 2 runs the same thing happened except this time he made a perfect throw but the catcher muffed the play and let the throw get passed him.

No errors so it will look like it's on the pitchers but the game should still be tied.

Hawkeyes Fall in Pitcher’s Duel

SAN DIEGO -- The University of Iowa baseball team dropped its first game of the Tony Gwynn Legacy Tournament, 4-1, to San Diego State, after the Hawkeyes gave up three runs in the seventh with two outs on Friday night at Tony Gwynn Stadium.

“Our guys came out and played well,” head coach Rick Heller said. “Two good pitchers going at it. Jack (Dreyer) pitched extremely well. Unfortunately, three of their four runs came via free bases. It was one of those Friday night games that if you make mistakes, it puts you in a bad spot.”

It was a pitcher’s duel for the first seven and a half innings.

Iowa’s starter – redshirt sophomore Jack Dreyer (1-1) – allowed only one run on three hits through the first six innings, including a streak of 10 straight batters retired. After retiring the first two batters of the seventh, the Johnston, Iowa native, issued his only two walks of the game, forcing Coach Heller to go to the bullpen.

He called upon senior right-hander Trace Hoffman to work out of the jam. The Cascade, Iowa native, induced three groundballs, but all three found holes for base hits. Two close plays at the plate didn’t fall Iowa’s way, and the Aztecs took control of the game with a three-run seventh inning.

Two of the runs were charged to Dreyer, with the final run charged to Hoffman. Dreyer finished with five strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings.

San Diego State’s starter Michael Parades was effective on the mound, too. He allowed only one run on three hits over six innings, while striking out seven, to stifle Iowa’s offense.

Sophomore infielder Brendan Sher had one of his team-best three singles off Parades. Iowa recorded six hits on the night, plating one run in the third after senior outfielder Ben Norman led off the third inning with a triple. He later scored on an Izaya Fullard sacrifice fly.

Iowa had the game-tying run up to bat in the eighth and ninth innings, but the comeback effort came up short.

OF NOTE…

  • Sher’s three hits tonight tied a career high and were the fourth game he’s done so. With a 3-for-4 effort tonight, Sher leads Iowa with a .500 batting average (6-for-12).
  • Norman recorded Iowa’s first triple of the season.
  • Redshirt sophomore Jack Guzek mad his Hawkeye debut in relief and senior Adam Ketelsen made his first appearance of the season in the eighth inning.

Iowa Takes Down No. 18 Arizona

SAN DIEGO -- The University of Iowa baseball team bounced back in the second game of the Tony Gwynn Legacy Tournament, downing No. 18 Arizona, 4-1, on Saturday afternoon at Fowler Park behind a strong pitching performance from senior Grant Judkins.

“I’m happy and proud of our team,” head coach Rick Heller said. “We showed a lot of toughness today with a quick turnaround. We played hard with good energy. We had a tremendous start from Grant today and we beat a good team with some big-time hitters.”

Judkins (2-0), a right-hander from Pella, Iowa, had his repertoire of pitches working from the get-go, allowing only two hits over six scoreless innings to earn the win. His only hits allowed were a bloop single to left field and a bunt single down the third base line.

Judkins retired the final 12 batters he faced, and that set the tone for Iowa’s offense.

The Hawkeyes scored two runs in the second and third innings, with four of their eight hits coming in those frames.

In the second inning, freshman Peyton Williams started the scoring with his first career home run to deep right center field. His two-run shot gave the Hawkeyes a 2-0 lead.

Iowa added on in the following inning. Junior Izaya Fullard walked and senior Austin Martin singled to start the inning, and Fullard came around to score on an RBI-single by senior Zeb Adreon. Martin scored on an RBI-groundout to extend Iowa’s lead to 4-0 after three.

Arizona scored its only run in the seventh inning after Iowa went to its bullpen. Junior left-hander Trenton Wallace struck out the first batter he faced, but loaded the bases after a single and two walks.

Junior Dylan Nedved relieved Wallace for the final two outs of the inning. He induced a ground ball that scored a run, followed by a line out to end the inning. Nedved worked a clean eighth with two strikeouts before handing the ball over to closer Grant Leonard.

Leonard needed only eight pitches to earn his second save of the season and 18th of his career to close out Iowa’s 4-1 win.

OF NOTE...

  • Today was Iowa’s first win over a ranked opponent. The Hawkeyes went 10-3 against top-30 teams last season.
  • Iowa pitchers limited Arizona to 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position.
  • Judkins is 2-0 with a 1.64 ERA and 12 strikeouts to only two walks in two starts this season.
  • Leonard's 18th career save moves him into sole possession of fourth place on Iowa's career saves list.
  • Williams went 2-for-3 -- his second career multi-hit game -- and stole his first career base on a delayed steal.
  • Martin tallied his second multi-hit game of the season on a 2-for-4 day with one double.
  • Senior and California native Matthew Sosa recorded his first multi-hit game of the season, finishing 2-for-4.

Iowa Drops Final Game of Tony Gwynn Tournament

SAN DIEGO -- In the University of Iowa’s fourth all-time meeting against San Diego, the Hawkeyes lost 10-5 in their final game of the Tony Gwynn Legacy Tournament on Sunday at Fowler Park.

“The first half of the game was solid,” head coach Rick Heller said. “We got a great start from Duncan Davitt. We had better at-bats today up-and-down the lineup. We stranded a lot of runners today, and had chances to break it open.”

Iowa jumped out to a 2-0 lead after two innings via a first-inning solo home run by sophomore Brendan Sher and a two-out RBI-double by redshirt freshman Brayden Frazier. It was Frazier’s first career hit and RBI.

The Toreros would go on to scored four unanswered runs to take a 4-2 lead heading into the seventh inning.

The Hawkeyes tied the game at four in the seventh on senior Zeb Adreon’s two-out RBI-single, scoring Sher and junior Izaya Fullard. Fullard finished the game 3-for-5 with three singles.

Iowa’s bullpen, which gave up nine runs in the game, allowed three runs in the bottom of the seventh to give San Diego a 7-4 lead. The Hawkeyes had two runners on with nobody out in the eighth, but a ground ball double play ended any comeback effort.

The Hawkeyes allowed three more runs in the eighth and scored a run of their own in the ninth to ultimately fall 10-5 and drop to 3-3 on the season.

In Duncan Davitt’s second start of the season, the right-hander went four innings, allowing one run on three hits with four strikeouts and one walk. Four Iowa relievers pitched the final five innings with sophomore Drew Irvine (0-1) suffering the loss.

OF NOTE…

  • San Diego has won six straight games.
  • The Hawkeyes out-hit the Toreros, 12-10, but left 13 runners on base.
  • Iowa has hit a home run in three of its last four games.
  • Fullard has hit safely in four straight games to bring his season average to .300 (6-for-20).
  • Matthew Sosa, a Whitter, California, native, went 4-for-7 from the plate in two starts at third base in his return to his home state.
