Iowa State's Athletic Department in Trouble Financially

Anyone remember a dive bar in the old stock yards called the Bull and the Bear back in the mid 90s? We used to run by it all the time on training runs and it looked like a place to hire a hitman. But, we decided to stop in one night. They didn't ID and the beer and food were so cheap. We hit that place hard for a semester until the cops finally raided the place one night. God I miss college!!!

"HA. What under 21 yr old hasn't had that happen at least once?"

Well, I never did, but that's because...
* I grew up in the early '70s;
* the drinking age then was 18;
* I had very long hair and a gotee of sorts by the time I was 16.
* Never got carded once from 16 on...

Of course, lived in Waterloo, which may have had something to do with that.

PS: Egads, how many people on this site grew up or live in NW Iowa??!!

Yep, it was on Leech. Now that little shack that used to be a bar is boarded up and a guy runs a muffler shop and fast eddie used car place out of the even smaller sheet metal building next to it. My guess is that bar is used to store mufflers, catalytic converters, and illicit substances. The county recorder website shows it's all one property.

Modest Proposal. Keep the sports that don’t make $$, which are the only “college” sports left. Football/Basketball already bring in enough revenue to do so. Greed sucks.

While I enjoy ISU suffering as much as anyone, I am confident ISU made more than the 800k in spent to fly a plane load of players and dignitaries to Ireland. They are dumb for trying to hide from this. Yes, we took the governor and a bunch of rich donors to the game. You have to spend money to make money. Business 101.

By being weird about it, they are making it into a story.

The problem is that football used to subsidize the other sports. At all schools except for the two major conferences, that is no longer happening. ISU and crappy schools like it are pouring revenue back into football and basketball to try and keep up, and there are not funds for field hockey anymore.

Without seeing the contract it is hard to say how much money they made if any? Do they get any TV money or did that all go to the conference in their regular revenue share? The sponsor already paid their airfare so I doubt they got money to play in the game from them and KState certainly didn’t pay them to play. I also doubt they got any gate or concessions either besides their allotment of 11k tickets

AI said that Kstate got 2.5 million as the home team and ISU got partial expenses paid via the free charter and some merch money. Makes sense as KState gave up a home game to do this. ISU was away and away teams don't get partial gate in conference. Pollard argued that they would have had to pay travel expenses either way, so they ended up better off by having the travel subsidized. That is only true if ISU would have brought such a huge contingency to Manhatten. Don't think the Gov needed to go to the Little Apple. So, there is probably some budget leakage here, but this seems like rounding error money. I still think ISU looks guilty by not just owning up to the costs and being transparent.

Something like that. Of course you're going to take a bunch of "connected" folks on a trip like that. That's no big deal.
