Iowa State's Athletic Department in Trouble Financially

In order to compete and make money midwest baseball has to be one of the worst options. You are basically required to travel for weeks at the start of the season to play which eats a ton of money. Then when the weather gets good enough to play outside it still isn’t consistent enough to draw good fan numbers.
NIL wouldn’t be enough to overcome the logistics on my opinion. Hence why Iowa is playing the Wartburg of the world
A few years ago I checked into it for funsies and you could get a baseball season ticket for like $75 and sit pretty much right behind home plate. I live over 5 hours away but thought I'd just see how much they were.

I never understood why they didn't hop on the women's wrestling train when Iowa was getting their dynasty started. Low-cost sport that might actually break even cost-wise for them. Even if they got shithammered by Iowa in the yearly duel the gate when it's in Ames would probably pay for most of their operations.

No way, it’ll lose money hand over fist.

GF, kid, and I will be at the Sioux City Relays in April to watch some of his underclassmen teammates run. You want me to bring a sharpie and write "NorthKCHawk was here" someplace inconspicuous? I'll have a Charlie Boy in your honor.
Sorry for the late response, just saw this post. Yes, write it on the metal garbage can on the infield. That is where I would go puke after the open 800.

Well, that is not really saying much. Every woman's sport with a few exceptions (Iowa WBB, Nebraska VB) loses money. The question is selecting a sport that loses the least money but still allows the scholarships necessary to comply with Title IX. Women's wrestling checks all the boxes for ISU.

There is low equipment needs. All the mats, scoring equipment, etc. exist for the men's program, so no investment there. They have training and locker facilities for women already. You need singlets and headgear. That and the cost of a couple coaches and some travel and you have a team. Wrestling is wildly popular in Iowa, so there is at least a chance of making some money back in tickets and donations. Certainly more so than a crappy gymnastics team. Pollard is a shrewd business guy, this would be the direction I predict he goes.

Were you consistently under 2 minutes?
In college? For sure. My PR was 1:51, and I would usually hit between 1:53 and 1:55 depending upon weather. Those were good times back in the day, but probably high school times these days. I made it to nationals a couple of times but got smoked by guys who should have been running D1 or foreign kids who were in their late 20s. I was NW Iowa good. :)

That all said, my post-race puking was championship level stuff.

Disagree. If they had started early building a team right away there'd have been plenty of wrestlers available to make a nationally competitive team. Especially being in Iowa. There would be a draw for an Iowa/Iowa State dual that would cover a big portion of program cost just from the gate every other year.

I am a Bob Roe's man myself, but Miles is good stuff as well.
Bob Roe's has the best wings in Sioux City, we get there a couple times a year. Problem (if you can call it that) is nowadays if you go on a Friday or Saturday and get there after 6 you're gonna wait a loooong time.

Miles isn't for everyone. It's like a way busier dive bar Cheers that happens to serve the best loose meat sandwich on the planet.

Every word of this is true.

True story. Second day on campus my freshmen year a few teammates and I go to dinner after practice at Bob Roe's. I had a fake ID, which was my older brother who was the center on our HS football team. As a reminder, I was at Morningside to run track and cross country, so I maybe weighed 145 pounds soaking wet. I decided to be a big man and order a beer. The lady asked for my ID, looked at it, laughed, and said, "how about I get you a coke, sweety." Yep, 18 year old NorthKC was quite humbled that August evening....

Yeah, what the f*ck was it with that race? I always seemed to gravitate towards the big garbage bins post race and let 'er fly. Indoor track was worse, maybe something about the air. Plus I usually had to do it in a bathroom post race being stuck indoors and all. For indoor home meets in college, the custodian started looking for me. I could only make it to a sink once or twice. I tried taking care of the mess myself - he was a good dude for never getting too pissed about it.

I usually would be good with just one race, but multiple 800s in one day would get me. I could usually run the open half and 4x400 and be okay, but if there was 4x800, 800, and 4x400 in one day, I was going to be head down in the garbage at least once. The half is a cruel race designed by Satan himself.

You’re insane.

Coaching staff is at least 250k.

No way they make that in gate in one year let alone 2.

That’s not even counting scholarships or support staff, travel and recruiting.

Edit: I looked it up: Iowa State generated 330k in revenue for the men’s wrestling team in 2023, the last reported year. There is no way in hell the women’s team would come close to breaking even.

Holy shit that takes me down memory lane... When I was young I'm talking like between 1985 and 1990ish My Gpa used to manage a fast pitch softball team in a league in Sioux City. And Bob Roe's was where we often went for pizza after. I probably haven't been there since the 90s and yet you bringing it up jogged my memory of it.

HA. What under 21 yr old hasn't had that happen at least once? Funny how a memory like that will stick with ya when something reminds you of it.

The place has not changed one single bit. Same stuff on the walls, same everything for the most part.

I went to Morningside in the late 90s and early 00's. Bobs and Miles were always on the list of places to end up any night. I haven't thought about a Charlie Boy and a Schooner in ages.

Miles is standing room only from about 2pm on Friday and Saturday nights and any time the Hawks are playing football or basketball. Same place it always was which is what I love about it.

I'm a Briar Cliff grad but never hung out there at night, wasn't into the bar scene. But I've had many hundreds of Charlie Boys in my life.
