Iowa playing Vandy in Sioux City

Pretty F'ing cool!

Jan and Beth got a preseason Top 10 team to agree to a one-year, "neutral site" game, deep within one of the more rural parts of Iowa. Wow. I am sure Vandy is getting a decent part of the gate, but it further proves that Iowa's WBB fans have made Iowa WBB a real player nationally.

That's the second big game that won't be played in Carver. Hope we at least will get 1 game that isn't a cupcake at Carver for the non conference schedule.

The Uconn is a home and home. So, we will see Geno next season. On Vandy, its hard to complain about a Power 4 school agreeing to a one-game "neutral site" game that is within our borders. To my understanding, both UConn and Vandy reached out to Iowa for these games. Not the other way. That is a clear reflection of the fan support Iowa brings to the table. Vandy could have demanded a home and home or a more neutral venue like somewhere in St. Louis. Apparently Iowa said no to traveling to their dumb, cavernous gym, and this was the compromise. Its in Iowa, not in Carver, and I am sure Vandy is getting some of the gate. Win win, but mostly a win for Iowa IMHO.

Sorry Carver will miss out on this one, but the good people of NW Iowa will get a chance to see their team without a 4 hour drive to IC, Lincoln or Minneapolis.

I think ISU and UNI are in Carver. I am guessing everything else in Carver preseason will be bye games.

Some of the mid-majors and low-majors Iowa played in Carver-Hawkeye last year were sneaky good teams. I am sure Iowa will get a few more teams like that at home in 2026-2027

I think good teams are learning that it is in their best interest to be intentional about the schedule and challenge your team in the non-con. Sure, there needs to be some cannon fodder games, but those games do not particularly make the team better nor help NET ratings. There needs to be multiple tough teams on the schedule.

I always felt that Fran was too dismissive of the non-con and rarely challenged his teams. Both Ben and Jan seem much more engaged in this regard. Frankly, both Iowa's men and women are both attractive targets to play right now for different reasons. Glad to see Iowa step up to the challenge.

This sounds great.

I do have one question, why such a small venue? I read where the arena only has seating for 6000 people and with SRO it goes to 9000 people. For one thing, that seems like a lot of fans just satnding around.

But it seems to me, at least, they could've gone to a bigger venue that seated a lot more fans and easily sold the tickets. Isn't revenue important?

Wonder how much the tickets are?

6,800 seated and 9,500 if SRO is included. That's about as big as it gets in NW Iowa. For comparison, the Pentagon in SFs, which has hosted a number of neutral site NCAA means and women's games, only holds about 3,500.

Let's assume that the conversation went as I think, and Vandy called us and proposed a nuetral site game and we responded that it had to tilt in our favor and be in Iowa, but not so close to IC to be effectively a home game (like say Des Moines). Tyson in SC is a pretty reasonable compromise.

I suppose they could have done Mid-America Center in Council Bluffs, but that's pretty much the same size.

Its crazy to think that we are talking about a neutral site WBB game in Sioux City, Iowa and we are questioning whether a 9,000 person arena is big enough to warrant the event. My god CC changed the face of women's sports in ways that I still have trouble believing.

I have a hunch Iowa proposed Souix City from the get go. I think I heard somewhere Iowa is trying to schedule more games in NW Iowa. Like at least one men or women's game each season.

It is Fry's neck of the woods. I am contemplating making the drive up from Omaha. Nothing says party like downtown Sioux City!!!
