Non-parochial schools won championships in all five classes.

5A--no parochial school made the finals. Dowling lost in semi's.
4A--same. Champ Carlisle, a #5 seed, took out #1 SC Bishop Heelan in the semi's.
3A--same. Both parochials lost in the semi's.
2A--same. Regina lost in the quarters.
1A--Bishop Garrigan made the finals. Lost to Newell-Fonda. BG was a #1 seed.

As discussd in other threads, Parochial's have a distinct advantage in Iowa HS sports, especially football.
I'm not anti-parochials per se as they apparently offer an educational prowess.
But when it comes to sports...go public programs!!

RSM sure found out what it's like to be a 1A public school this year. Bare cupboard and small numbers. I don't feel bad about it because they had plenty of "imports" from all over the place until now.

They didn't even play a full season of football and I heard a radio interview with someone who'll remain nameless whining incessantly about how it was because of injuries, etc. Gimme a BREAK dude. You think literally every other 8 man and 1A team doesn't have numbers problems? The only thing unequal about the playing field is your private school, not the other way around. GTFO. With your resources compared to like GTRA or Harris-Lake Park you should have a full cupboard ready to rock. GTRA went 8-1 and they don't have a bunch of richie rich support from anywhere.

It seems like the "transfer" rules are a little more lose now, which may help public schools going forward. Used to feel like a kid transferring to a public school always required a sitting out period, but private schools were better at getting the kid eligible right away. I've seen more public schools transfers without the sitting out period lately, which may balance the scales a little more.

There's always debate about public vs private, but I think the advantage most private schools have is that they usually are smaller schools in a suburban footprint, and it's that geographic advantage that is the key. I would assume most championships at the 8-man, A, 1A and 2A classes are probably won by 'suburban' schools (Privates, Van Meter, Grundy Center, Treynor, etc.) rather than rural small town schools.

There was 1 year a few years back where 31 of the 32 teams that qualified for the state baseball tournament were in the top 40% (privates included) of the free-and-reduced count. Which basically means 60% of the schools have very little chance of major success. The private school thing is bad, but the suburb/high SES schools are getting to be just as bad. These schools form all-star teams in little league and play together for 4 or 5 years. They grow closer together and want to go to the same school. They get steered toward a school by a parent, coach, or even work out together at a place where a person that works with them has ties to a certain school steers them toward a certain school. This may sound far-fetched, but I know of each of these (and more) that have happened. I always follow Iowa JUCO/D3 baseball teams and their rosters will have the players' home towns and they may be 20 miles from the place where they went to HS, and again, it's not just the private schools anymore.

Must've incorporated one hell of a weightlifting/speed and agility program in 2023. Not sure what other explanation there could be.

Couldn’t afford 22 jerseys, 16 was doable. Terrible deal. Glad they found a solution
