Could Iowa becoming QB U?

Well probably not but we are definitely seeing good improvement with Lester on board.......... but did his first name have to be Jake?

The Iowa Hawkeyes offered Jake Nawrot back in January and appear to be hot on the trail with strong efforts to get a commitment from the product of Hersey High School in Arlington Heights, Illinois.

Per the Rivals Industry Rankings, Nawrot checks in as a four-star recruit in the class of 2027. He currently carries offers from Iowa, Boston College, Duke, Kansas, Kansas State, Kentucky, Missouri, Northwestern, Oklahoma State, Purdue, Rutgers, Syracuse, Washington, Wisconsin, Miami (OH), and Toledo.

More of a traditional passer, Nawrot threw for 3,078 yards during his 2025 high school season while completing 71% (187-263) of his passes for 41 touchdowns to only two interceptions.

Petras was a 4* with massive HS numbers. Deuce Hogan was a 4*. Plenty of reasons to maintain skepticism, but it is never a bad thing to be in on a highly rated QB. One of them is going to hit, eventually.

Good to be in on him and he would be close to home. Not that ratings matter but, if he is the second rated QB on Rivals board, why isn't he a 5-star? I know not many get the coveted 5-star rating but you would think two QBs would get that distinction.

Was wondering the same thing. Maybe just a weak class? His highlights do look good...hitting tight windows, tons of deep balls on target.

I am guessing they don't hand out a ton of 5 stars until they see some senior tape? Hold it back to see if that last star is deserved for great performances senior year?

Injuries, regression, etc. They don't seem to like to downgrade stars.

I understand the skepticism and no one is handing him the Heisman. I would say that the difference between those guys and this guy, perhaps, will be who is coaching him. :) We now have an actual OC and QB coach!

If I've learned anything by following recruiting in the NIL era, it's that you shouldn't follow recruiting in the NIL era.

All it takes is one bag and the warm and fuzzies get replaced by other warm and fuzzies. I don't start following players until they show up to camp.

I am a little more interested in recruiting than you, but I get your point.

Question: do kids still sign national letters of intent? Are they enforceable? It would seem to me that they are not since the NCAA currently allows unlimited transfers. But, curious if these documents have any relevance these days. It almost feels like these are one-way agreements. The school has to honor them for at least a year, but the kid could walk away the next day. Right?

I definitely don't follow it as close as I used to, but it's still fun to see who's even considering Iowa. But like you, I don't actually get excited about anyone until I see their name stitched on the jersey.

This is exactly right.

Most recruits don't receive a 5-star rating until well into their senior seasons, especially at positions like QB, where things can turn around in a hurry.

I wonder if there is a market-inefficiency to exploit here? For example, all the blue bloods are trying to find the big-money portal target that has proven himself at the college level. Can we sneak in and get a much higher recruit than we could 5 years ago? And can we leverage the culture and development (combined with some smart NIL spending) that has given Iowa the lowest level of attrition in college FB over the past few years to actually keep him on campus? I think that is the ideal scenario for Iowa, we just need to get better at IDing the right guy in HS (we haven't done that successfully since Stanley).

Yup. The day they physically set foot ON the practice field in uniform is when I believe any of it and then only for one season no matter how much they feign Hawkeye loyalty. The recruiting coverage gig is laughable these days but I understand the fascination for many fans looking for action.

NLIs got eliminated by the NCAA in 2024.

They sign agreements for financial aid and scholarships, but that's it. There's nothing binding eligibility-wise anymore. If you sign a financial aid or scholarship document and break it, the only thing a school can do is revoke the scholarship offer, which is obviously not a deterrent because they get the same thing at their new school.
